Qualified Dental Nurse – Oral Maxillofacial
Join NHS Scotland as a Qualified Dental Nurse in the Oral Maxillofacial and Orthodontic Services at University Hospital Wishaw. The role supports specialist dental treatment for patients referred by dental practitioners and other healthcare professionals.
Responsibilities
* Work as part of a team of Dental Nurses providing full surgery and administrative support to a consultant-led Orthodontic and OMFS Service.
* Assist in clinic sessions operated by the Public Dental Service as required.
* Provide chairside clinical and administrative assistance for a wide variety of treatments including examinations, restorations, extractions, surgical procedures, prosthodontic treatment, preventive treatments, x‑rays, orthodontic treatment, and treatment under local anaesthetic and/or sedation.
* Support clinicians, patients, carers and staff undergoing training.
* Organise appointments, liaise with referring dentists, check patient details, advise patients, manage work to and from the dental lab, and record activity on computerised systems.
Qualifications
* Level of specialist theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work with a variety of clinicians and respond to emergencies.
* Experience working in a dental surgery and in a multidisciplinary environment. Experience across multiple branches of dentistry is an advantage.
* Strong knowledge of orthodontic treatments, techniques and materials.
* Ability to anticipate the support needed by dentist and patient for safe, economical, efficient and effective treatment.
* Nationally recognised (NEB) Dental Nurse Qualification.
* Certificate in Orthodontics for Dental Nurses.
* Registered with the GDC as a Dental Nurse.
* Commitment to Continuing Professional Development and participation in the PDP process.
* Experience in clinical governance activities such as audit.
* Understanding of the Data Protection Act.
* Immediate level of theoretical knowledge for orthognathic surgery and OMFS.
* Excellent interpersonal and patient management skills, including communication at all levels and good reporting skills.
* Flexible and adaptable approach to work with initiative, intuition and creativity to overcome problems.
* Confidentiality management while working within the dental team.
* IT skills – proficient with computer use, CS R4, Microsoft Office Suite, e‑mail and data protection.
* Knowledge of dental procedures, new techniques and up‑to‑date materials.
* Knowledge of NHS Lanarkshire policies and administrative procedures.
* Awareness of patient confidentiality, child protection issues, the Disability Discrimination Act and the Adults with Incapacity Act.
* Manual handling skills and CPR certification.
* Valid full driving licence with access to a car.
* Full UK/EU/EEA licence if a driving licence is required.
