Systems Engineer, ESC Managed Operations

AWS is introducing the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC). We are seeking experienced systems engineers with a strong background in automation and operations to join the AWS Managed Operations team and help deliver high-availability AWS services for EU customers, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock.

Responsibilities include overseeing the launch of the ESC in 2025, collaborating with global AWS teams, and influencing the evolution of AWS services and technology. You will work with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC. The role may require participating in on-call rotations to resolve incidents outside business hours.

The overarching goal is to deliver scalable services and ensure a high-availability experience for EU customers. You will help build a best-in-class development, engineering and operations team aligned with AWS’ commitment to customer satisfaction and continual innovation.

Utility Computing (UC) and European Sovereign Cloud (ESC)
ESC is part of AWS Utility Computing (UC). UC provides innovations across Compute, Database, Storage, IoT, Platform, and Productivity Apps services. Managed Operations engineers engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for cloud services.

Eligibility

* Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
* Must be a national of an EU member state and reside in the EU to operate the ESC.
* Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
* Employees will participate in an on-call rota.

A day in the life

Contribute to the operation and improvement of significant software systems. Review operational health of services, identify anomalies, and craft actionable bug reports to enhance efficiency and performance. Provide feedback on change management documents and address the team’s operational backlog. Develop and test scripts to improve workflows. Share insights on the European Sovereign Cloud with service teams to foster knowledge and collaboration. Expect 24x7 on-call responsibilities as part of a team to root-cause issues and ensure resilience and fault tolerance.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

* EU national and resident in the EU.
* Demonstrated expertise in systems engineering across hardware, software, networking, and operating systems.
* Experience scripting with Bash, Python, or Ruby.
* Solid understanding of Linux and networking; ability to troubleshoot performance, reliability, or availability issues.
* Ability to create, revise, and improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) and drive operational best practices.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Experience with monitoring frameworks (e.g., CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic, or similar).
* Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading cross-organizational, strategic team efforts.
* Experience supporting services in AWS or other cloud environments.
* Experience operating 24x7 high-availability distributed applications and optimizing fleet utilization.
* Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
