Overview

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research. The Trust comprises four hospitals – the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury.

We are advertising a twelve-month clinical Fellowship in Neuroanaesthesia at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. This post is aimed at suitably qualified anaesthetists (trainees at ST7 level or above).


Clinical details

Main area: Neuroanaesthesia. Grade: NHS Medical & Dental Local Appointment nodal point 5 (MT05). Contract: 12 months (12 months fixed term). Hours: Full time - 40 hours per week. Job ref: 321-CSS-MS-7543940-S6. Site: John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Salary: £73,992 Per Annum. Salary period: Yearly. Closing: 24/10/2025 23:59.


Main duties of the job

The fellow will be based primarily in neuro-theatres and the neuroradiology suite in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital and will deliver anaesthesia to neurosurgical patients. When required, time may be spent delivering anaesthesia in other surgical specialties such as orthopaedics, transplant, vascular, upper GI, plastics, and ENT. This will be averaged over time and reviewed with their educational supervisor on a 3 monthly basis.

The fellowship program covers all aspects of neurosurgery, complex spinal surgery and interventional neuroradiology. In addition, there is an opportunity to develop skills in peri-operative medicine and neuroradiology. The trainee will be a member of the ST6-7 on-call group covering the West Wing and Neuro ICU on call rota on an approximately 1:10 frequency. Annual and study leave arrangements must be coordinated within the department to ensure there is an acceptable level of clinical cover.

There will also be opportunity to gain experience in neuro-critical care. The Neuro-Critical Care Unit is a 16 bedded unit providing care for a diverse patient population, both national and international.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The clinical sessions will be agreed with the clinical lead and will form the basis of the Fellowship job plan. The following programme sets out the basic requirements of the Fellowship, the details to be negotiated and agreed with the post holder prior to commencement of the post.

The Fellow is expected to assist with projects running in the department.

The Fellow will meet with the clinical supervisor to agree the individual training plan following the period of induction; this will be tailored to suit the individual needs of the fellow. It will take account of clinical, interpersonal and management skills and knowledge. The Fellow will be required to give their agreement to the training programme and confirm their commitment to participate fully in the training and appraisal process.

Qualifications/Training

* FRCA or equivalent
* Higher Medical Degree ATLS, ALS
* On GMC register


Experience

* Specialist training in Anaesthesia and experience in multidisciplinary team working in complex cases
* Interest in research
* Ability to make decisions at ST6/7 level
* Experience in neuroanaesthesia / neurocritical care
* Publications/presentations
* Management of complex rotas


Skills and Knowledge

* Evidence of team leadership skills to be able to undertake effectively the role of a Fellow, in a large multi-site teaching hospital
* Organisational skills to be able to undertake effectively the role of a Fellow within a large multi-site teaching hospital.
* Management training and experience; Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
* Good personal and interpersonal skills
* Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed.
* Experience of teaching medical, nursing and PAM, undergraduates and postgraduates
* Experience of routine clinical audit
* Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government’s agenda for modernisation
* Flexible approach to problem solving
* Experience in perioperative medicine-based teaching
* Willingness to conduct and/or supervise audit
