Job Overview The Emergency Department (ED) was purpose built in 2014 and offers state of-the-art facilities. This was part of a new development at Glan Clwyd Hospital called the Emergency Quadrant (EQ) which brings all Emergency and Acute Services together. The EQ houses the ED, Same day emergency care (SDEC), a 24 bed Acute Medical Unit, Surgical Assessment Unit, Radiology services, and a co-located primary care facility. The EQ is based on a guiding principle of close working between specialties to provide excellent care to patients by fostering cooperation and interaction between teams. There are approximately 60,000 attendances a year, of which 15,000 are under 18. The ED sees a full case mix of undifferentiated emergencies encompassing all specialties including Major Trauma, Stroke, Cardiac, Vascular, ENT, Ophthalmology, Max Fax and Paediatrics. The Department has also been undergoing a process of implementation of modern models of Emergency Care including streaming, ambulatory majors, and rapid assessment. Main duties of the job Support the Nurse in Charge to manage Emergency Department (ED) risk escalating ED capacity and safety concerns Allocating staff to the ED areas and responding to demand by moving staff as needed, following up on any sickness / no-shows / late starts and ask for extra cover Focusing on patient safety risks, reviewing unwell patients, and seeing patients as needed. Supporting the streaming of patients to MIUs, specialities or SDEC where appropriate Anticipating and intervening with unexpected issues, e.g., health and safety risks Prescribing analgesia, signing off ECGs and blood gases as needed Order imaging and investigations as necessary to support triage and streaming and review results. Taking calls from MIUs, GPs, Microbiology, Radiology and Pathology. undertake the role of Trauma Team Leader for Major Trauma Investigation, report writing, and investigating/updating of Datix and action plans on current incidents and complaints sharing learning from these events with ED team Supporting the streaming service/ Rapid assessment and treatment service. Please contact Dr Nandita Parmar Nandita.Parmar@wales.nhs.uk Person specification Training And Qualifications Essential criteria Full GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview FRCEM Valid ATLS, ALS, APLS or equivalent provider status Desirable criteria Subspecialty training in Paediatrics or Prehospital EM Instructor Status in ALS, ATLS, APLS or equivalents Other relevant postgraduate qualifications e.g. DipIMC RCEM Level 1 accreditation in EM Ultrasound Evidence of shop floor supervision training e.g. RCEM ELSEs Training in leadership and human factors Experience And Leadership Essential criteria Substantive work in UK EM practice at senior decision maker level Able to provide ED shop floor leadership and supervision Able to provide senior EM clinical skills and leadership as described by the RCEM Curriculum Evidence of professional interests relevant to EM practice Experience, commitment, and enthusiasm for teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate level Willingness to teach all clinical staff including ACPs, paramedics, nurses, PAs, and ENPs. Desirable criteria Postgraduate training in clinical education Clinical Governance Essential Criteria Experience of EM clinical governance activity Understanding of patient safety and risk management Experience of audit and quality improvement Ability to undertake EM relevant project work and liaise with specialties. Desirable criteria Evidence of a service improvement activity Evidence of strategic work e.g., contribution to planning and policy development Ability to deliver change Professional Development and Research Essential Criteria CPD portfolio relevant to UK EM practice Ability to undertake critical appraisal and support any departmental research activity Desirable criteria Evidence of role in delivering CPD Evidence of research activity and EM relevant publications Other Requirements Essential criteria A shared ethos and to values of the health board Flexibility, personal integrity, and willingness to work cohesively in the ED team. Commitment to the importance of respect and dignity for all individuals High standards of verbal and written English Desirable criteria Able to attend hospital within 30 mins for on-call duties Welsh Speaker or willingness to learn Welsh
