Location: Brighton - Moulsecoomb
Salary: £41,064 to £48,822 pro rata

Overview
Join a new interdisciplinary international research project working at the interface between pragmatics and cognitive science. This project is supported by The Leverhulme Trust and involves Dr Tim Wharton, Principal Lecturer, School of Humanities and Social Science as PI, as well as colleagues from the Swiss Centre of Affective Science in Geneva, Switzerland.

You will be working closely with Dr Wharton, to investigate the relationship between cognition and affect and explore the intersection between the notion of relevance used in relevance-theoretic pragmatics and the notions of relevance used in appraisal theory, a major theoretical and experimental approach to affective science.

Responsibilities
The appointment is for a fixed term (0.7 full-time equivalent) with an ideal start date of 01/11/25 and an end date of 31/08/27. You will:

* Be a researcher in linguistics/pragmatics central to the focus of the project, contributing to theoretical and empirical work.
* Research in pragmatics and cognitive science, with familiarity with the pragmatics literature on ineffability and the cognitive appraisal theory of emotion.
* Maintain up-to-date breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in linguistics and research methods and techniques.
* Organise meetings (online and in person) and participate in research events, including an international workshop that will form part of the project.
* Demonstrate commitment to continuous professional development including publications and research methods.
* Engage with equality of opportunity, ethical research practices, and relevant academic governance.
* Demonstrate competent IT skills and effective use of IT for teaching and learning where applicable.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role you should have:

* A PhD (or equivalent professional experience) in linguistics/pragmatics aligned with the project focus.
* Experience researching pragmatics and cognitive science, with familiarity with ineffability literature and cognitive appraisal theory of emotion.
* Sufficient breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in linguistics and research methods.
* Experience organizing meetings and research events, with international conference/workshop participation.
* Evidence of commitment to professional development and publications.
* Understanding of equality of opportunity and ethical research practices.
* Competent IT skills relevant to research and teaching tasks.
