Junior Design Engineer
Location: Irlam, Manchester
Salary: £28,000-£35,000 DOE
Our client is a leading provider of automation and robotic engineering solutions, delivering full turnkey machinery across a range of industries. They’re now looking for a skilled Mechanical Fitter to join their growing team.
Key Responsibilities
Support the development of concept designs for bespoke automation equipment.
Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for manufacturing and assembly (experience with SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or similar preferred).
Assist in producing complete drawing packs, including BOMs (Bills of Materials).
Work with senior engineers to develop solutions that meet functional, safety, and customer requirements.
Participate in design reviews and contribute to design improvements.
Support project documentation, including design risk assessments and technical reports.
Liaise with internal teams (controls, manufacturing, and assembly) to ensure designs are feasible and cost-effective.
Visit customer sites to support installations, design validation, or gather project requirements.
Maintain awareness of relevant standards (machinery safety, CE/UKCA marking, etc.) with training provided as required.
Requirements
Essential:
Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline (or HNC/HND equivalent with relevant experience).
Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals (mechanical design principles, materials, tolerances, manufacturing processes).
Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or similar).
Ability to produce clear, accurate 2D engineering drawings.
Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
Enthusiasm to learn, develop, and contribute to innovative engineering solutions.
Desirable:
1–2 years’ experience in a mechanical design or automation-related role (placement year counts).
Understanding of automated machinery, robotics, or production equipment.
Basic understanding of electrical, pneumatic, or control systems.
Experience with PDM systems and BOM management.
