AMU and ward 4 are looking for an enthusiastic health care support worker who wants to make a difference.
The Acute Medical Unit receives medical admissions from the Emergency Department. It is a busy unit comprising 20 beds with 8 assessment/triage trolleys. We also have a 28 bedded general medical ward attached to AMU (ward 4). We are one team and you will be allocated to work in both areas.
Exceptional teamwork is essential to this role, along with a warm and friendly bedside manner and the ability to work in a high-pressure environment. Previous hospital care experience is beneficial but we accept applications from those without hospital care experience.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting qualified nurses to meet the basic nursing needs of patients, and will also work from their own initiative in a fast-paced environment.
You will need outstanding communication skills as you will be part of a team including HCSWs, physician assistants, qualified nurses, nurse practitioners, junior doctors and consultants. You will be expected to communicate with these team members and liaise with ward clerks on admissions, transfers, and discharges.
Your day-to-day routine will include, but is not limited to: assisting with patients’ hygiene and toileting, serving meals and assisting with eating and drinking, taking and recording vital observations, maintaining stock and PPE, assisting with wound dressings, disposing of hazardous waste safely, and documenting in patients notes.
You will be expected to have a good standard of literacy and numeracy due to requirements to document patient information and vital signs.
There will be opportunities to develop further with training and education; all HCSWs are enrolled on to basic life support training.
