Peripatetic passenger assistant

Dorset Travel coordinates the transport provision for children and young people with additional needs within Dorset and in surrounding areas. The team also supplies and supports transport needs for mainstream, child care and adults.

The role of a Passenger Assistant is to support children and young people with additional assistance in maintaining a safe environment on the journey to and from home or school. This vacancy is for a Peripatetic Passenger Assistant from the Weymouth Area to cover regular passenger assistant absences. Candidates must be available morning and afternoon to coincide with school opening and closing times and may need to travel as required.

Responsibilities

• Support children and young people with additional needs during journeys to and from school or home.
• Maintain a safe environment on the journey.
• Be physically fit to run, bend, stretch, push, pull, lift, carry and kneel as required.
• Be available in the mornings and afternoons to match school times, with holiday leave taken during school holidays.
• Use own vehicle and maintain Business Insurance coverage.
• Undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
• Attend induction and refresher training as required.
• Provide additional medical support (see Medical Training section).

Qualifications and Skills

• Knowledge of moderate and complex learning needs.
• Understanding of safeguarding children.
• Recognition of hazards and how to report them.
• Customer care mindset.
• Ability to run, bend, stretch, push, pull, lift, carry and kneel.
• Physical fitness and willingness to undertake required medical training.

Salary and Working Hours

Contracted at approximately 20 hours per week, term time only. The rate is £13.05 per hour. Salary is pro‑rata based on the number of hours, the number of weeks worked and the paid annual leave entitlement for employees under five years of service. In the first year of service salary may be adjusted to reflect holiday entitlement, and a similar adjustment may be made at the point of employment end to accurately reflect days worked in an academic year.
