Screening Technician - Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme

Main duties of the job
* Undertake abdominal ultrasound scanning as part of the community AAA screening programme, ensuring scans are performed to a high standard in accordance with national standard operating procedures.
* Reassure men attending the community AAA screening and surveillance clinics, explain the screening test and its implications, and ensure patients are informed and supported throughout the pathway.
* Work independently within training and experience, making judgments as required; travel across the Cheshire and Merseyside area to carry out screening in community venues; base location at the New Royal Liverpool hospital site.
* Observe programme guidelines, liaise with administrative staff, nurses, clinicians and screening staff, and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
Responsibilities
* Observe and care for men attending the screening clinic; obtain informed consent where applicable; put patients at ease and answer queries.
* Communicate screening outcomes clearly to patients and carers as appropriate; provide information and support according to the patient pathway.
* Record and report scan data accurately, ensuring data is transmitted to the screening office and escalated if results are outside specified criteria.
* Maintain disease prevention and infection-control standards within screening environments.
Qualifications and experience
* Essential: 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including Human Biology, or a Diploma in a relevant subject; NVQ 3 in a relevant subject.
* Desirable: Specialist training such as Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screener).
Knowledge, skills and attributes
* Understanding of anatomy and physiology of the abdominal aorta; ability to identify scan areas and recognise measurements outside the normal range.
* Ability to operate ultrasound equipment to optimise images; deliver clear outcomes to patients and relatives; work under pressure and within a team.
* Excellent written and verbal communication; good organisational skills; accurate data entry and attention to detail; willingness to travel between units and community venues.

* Adhere to infection control policies; ensure cleanliness and tidiness of screening rooms; comply with safeguarding policies for children and adults; participate in mandatory safeguarding training.
