The Role
The Community Life and Student Safeguarding Advisor plays a key role in the development and delivery of a brilliant and inclusive newly formed Student Support and Community Life service. Working closely with the Community Life and Student Safeguarding Lead, the postholder will be a primary point of contact for students and their supporters in relation to all forms of anti-social behaviour, harassment, and harm within our community.
The postholder will champion our commitment to creating an inclusive, positive residence and campus culture in which members of our community feel safe and supported and where in no circumstances are they subjected to hate or harm.
The postholder will maintain a caseload of students which relate to community concerns, flatmate disputes, issues relating to harassment and violence, sexual misconduct etc. They will further develop our 'Report and Support' system and work to develop an overarching support framework that balances preventative work with responding to issues and concerns as they are reported.
The postholder will join our team of Sexual Violence Liaison Officers (SVLOs) and will be supported with regular training to assist them with this important work.
What you'll do
This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.
Assist the Community Life and Safeguarding Lead in responding appropriately to incidents and reports and in liaising with relevant stakeholders and services in relation to serious incidents.
Manage a caseload of student concerns, incidents and queries ensuring active and supported referrals to the appropriate services are made; for instance, to the Accessibility and Wellbeing Service, Academic Departments, Emergency Services etc.
Supporting the development and delivery of community Life and student safeguarding campaigns that seek to deter and/or prevent as well as to encourage community engagement, celebrate our community and to encourage active participation and responsibility.
Monitor the 'Report and Support' system, assessing risk and need and refer or respond as is appropriate.
Support survivors of sexual violence or misconduct who have disclosed via the online reporting system.
Work with the Community Life and Safeguarding lead and other relevant colleagues to analyse and monitor disclosures and trends and provide guidance and recommendations to services for response and service development.
Support the Community Life and Safeguarding Lead to develop policies, processes and activities which are designed to prevent harassment and/or violence in our community.
Assessing and manage risks both in terms of supporting individual students whose personal safety is deemed to be at elevated risk and acting as a specialist source of advice for cases which pose potential or actual reputational risk; involving and collaborating with relevant colleagues to manage and deescalate risks as required.
Support all aspects of the Student Journey playing an enthusiastic role in a range of key events including, for example, Welcome Weekend, Open Days, Visiting Days, Graduation etc. and individual projects.
Play an active role in developing a feedback and impact model, which enables students and other stakeholders to share their experiences. The postholder will ensure that feedback is considered and that these influence ideas and proposals for future development and enhancement activity.
Undertake other duties as assigned by your line manager, commensurate with the role's grade.
Engage in university-level projects and initiatives as directed, and undertake any additional duties commensurate with the role, as assigned by the line manager.
Demonstrate flexibility by supporting colleagues during periods of high demand, including attendance at key university events such as open days and graduation ceremonies which may include weekend work.

Essential
Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills required
Degree level of education or professional experience relevant to the role
Experience of safeguarding practice and/or supporting people in relation to harm, harassment etc. Ideally within and educational setting.
Evidence of working as part of a multidisciplinary team, responding to issues effectively and in partnership.
Ability to empathise with the needs of young people from a range of cultures and backgrounds and the ability to gain the respect of students even when undertaking disciplinary action.
Self-starter with the ability to manage own time and deadlines, with attention to detail through to completion.
A team player, able to build positive, cooperative relationships with colleagues and complementary services.
A 'people and service' ethic, suited to the provision of a customer focused service, with an understanding that education and learning is at the core of the University's purpose.
Articulate, able to communicate verbally and through various media to a wide range of stakeholders, using inter- personal, negotiation, and leadership skills.
Excellent analytical and innovative approaches to safeguarding, planning, decision‑making, and problem‑solving skills.
Able to identify and operate within appropriate personal and professional boundaries.
Self-confident with the ability to earn the respect of both students and colleagues; to gently educate groups of students; and to build positive, cooperative relations with colleagues.
