Principal Sustainability Consultant

The role
A unique opportunity to lead projects and drive sustainable practice as a Principal Sustainability Consultant. The position is based in Cardiff and is part of the broader Sustainability discipline across all Hoare Lea offices.
Responsibilities
* Act as Discipline (sustainability) Project Lead for medium to large scale projects at all RIBA stages, delivering all relevant documentation for outline and detailed planning submissions.
* Lead workstreams, owning delivery and supporting senior team members on large scale projects.
* Develop and coordinate resource and project plans, supporting fellow Discipline Project Leads.
* Facilitate workshops with clients and design teams, communicating information clearly and concisely.
* Delegate, manage and review work undertaken by others.
* Undertake and support detailed analyses, including:
o Energy performance simulations (e.g., Building Regulations Part L, Part O, thermal comfort, operational energy)
o BREEAM, HQM, WELL and other core environmental certifications
o Energy strategies for planning (outline and detailed) and design development
o Whole‑life carbon assessments
* Provide input to Technical Excellence communities, advancing firm knowledge and maintaining cutting‑edge practice.
* Mentor and train junior team members in delivery, consultancy and project planning.
What we are looking for
* Detailed knowledge and competence in a range of sustainability domains (core competencies can focus on a subset).
* Experience in project leadership, resource planning and training/mentoring junior staff.
* Track record in environmental and wellbeing assessments (BREEAM, Home Quality Mark, WELL).
* Whole‑life carbon assessment experience (e.g., OneClick LCA).
* Successful planning application delivery and local authority collaboration; experience in the London market is an advantage.
* Operational energy assessment skills (CIBSE TM54, NABERS UK Design for Performance).
* Development of sustainable strategies, environmental impact assessments and circular economy statements.
* Ability to develop fee proposals.

* Registered with a professional body and working towards chartership (advantage).
* Degree in an applicable field and passion for creating sustainable solutions.
* Confident workshop facilitator and team leader.
* Excellent communication skills and enthusiasm for teamwork.
* Committed to sustainability and driving industry advancement.
