Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technician Apprentice - Jazz Pharmaceuticals
The Engineering Maintenance Technician Apprentice will provide mechanical and electrical maintenance skills to support manufacturing and development activities within a pharmaceutical environment.
Training course: Engineering maintenance technician – dual discipline (level 3)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am – 4.30pm with a 30‑minute lunch break. 40 hours a week.
Duration: 4 years.
Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands‑on experience.
What you’ll do at work
* Carrying out planned preventative maintenance
* Responding to plant and equipment breakdowns
* Fault diagnosis, problem‑solving, and rectification of mechanical/electrical problems, working collaboratively with other functions
* Involved in operational excellence (OE) continuous improvement initiatives
* Issue and comply with equipment, department, and maintenance schedules, using the CMMS to execute and complete work orders. Documented maintenance and calibration are integral to the daily routine
* As part of a team, take part in equipment qualification activities (commissioning, IQ, OQ, FAT, SAT)
* Create SOPs, internal service reports, and machine‑setting sheets for new equipment and update existing ones as required
* Carry out maintenance and spares reviews for new capital projects
* Update and train in required risk assessments
* Perform work in a way that protects personal and others’ health and safety, security, and the environment, and report any issues including near misses and accidents
* Ensure compliance in all aspects of GMP, health and safety, and environmental standards. Quality is a primary focus to ensure patients receive a safe, effective, and quality‑assured product
* Support investigations (safety and quality) as required by providing SME input

Training
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.
Training for this apprenticeship will be completed through day release in Rochester.

* Segregate items for reuse, recycling, and waste
* Use mathematical principles and formulae to support engineering maintenance
* Apply engineering maintenance standards and procedures
* Apply foreign material exclusion procedures
* Follow maintenance tools and equipment control procedures (e.g., handling and storage)
* Reinstate the work area
* Apply team‑working principles
* Communicate with others to give and receive information (e.g., colleagues, customers, and stakeholders)
* Escalate issues outside limits of responsibility

* Produce or amend documents (e.g., handover notes and reports)
* Identify and highlight issues (red pen) with technical drawings
* Use digital and information technology (e.g., databases, data‑sharing platforms, email, management information systems, and word processing), following cyber security and GDPR requirements
* Apply continuous improvement techniques to identify improvement suggestions
* Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities
* Electrical and control & instrumentation: confirm safe electrical isolation lockout‑tagout method has been applied and test for dead, select, check, and use electrical measurement and test equipment, apply fault‑finding and rectification techniques, inspect and test electrical aspects of plant, remove and replace electrical parts, prepare and terminate electrical cables, set up and adjust electrical aspects of plant, clean parts, conduct and confirm isolation, conduct functional testing, inspect and test control and instrumentation systems, check calibration, adjust loop function, set up and adjust control systems, remove and replace instruments & sensors
* Electrical and mechanical: confirm safe isolation lockout‑tagout, conduct isolation, select, check, and use mechanical and electrical tools, apply diagnostic techniques, inspect and test electrical aspects, remove and replace parts, prepare and terminate cables, set up, align, and adjust mechanical aspects, clean parts, conduct functional testing, check mechanical operation (e.g., pumps), remove and replace mechanical parts, examine parts for defects, lubricate assemblies, apply bench fitting techniques
Requirements
* 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English (grade 4/C or above)
* Any course related to Maths or Science (grade CCC or above)
* Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
