LAS Doctor in Inpatient Psychiatry

CNWL have an exciting opportunity for a LAS (Trust Grade) Doctor to work on our General Adult Male Inpatient Ward at The Campbell Centre in Milton Keynes.

This is a full time, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm post.

Main duties of the job

* To perform clinical assessment of individuals with mental health problems, including history taking, mental state examination, physical examination
* To develop evaluation and formulation skills
* To understand pharmacological management of common mental health problems
* To develop interview and risk assessment skills
* To develop a working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and its application
* To be able to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team


About us

Diggory Division is responsible for the delivery of Mental Health, Addictions and Community services in Milton Keynes, as well as Addictions services, Sexual Health/HIV and Health and Justice services in London and Surrey. Diggory has an ethos of fair, collaborative, inclusive leadership. As a Division we meet on a weekly basis with our services to support staff to deliver safe services and empower teams to promote staff wellbeing and have a learning and improvement culture.

The Campbell Centre in Milton Keynes is a 39-bed acute inpatient mental health unit. It has two wards, Hazel Ward and Willow Ward, predominantly for working-age adults who require a hospital admission when suffering from a mental health problem. The wards are staffed 24 hours a day and the team consist of nurses, occupational therapists, doctors, psychologists, pharmacy staff, peer support workers and domestic staff.


Job responsibilities

* Participate in daily ward rounds, enabling care plans to be monitored
* Attend daily Safety Huddles and weekly Bed Management meetings to ensure the flow of patients is good and the provision of care is safe and effective
* Work in collaboration with patients, families and carers focusing on the patients recovery
* Facilitate timely discharge from hospital by working closely with colleagues in the Crisis Resolution Team and community services
* Carry out physical investigations, manage minor ailments and arrange appropriate referrals as required
* Carry out full psychiatric assessments, risk management, and formulate plans for treatment in collaboration with the MDT
* Communicate appropriately with patients, relatives, GPs and other agencies
* Be responsible for the prescription of appropriate pharmacological treatments
* Be encouraged to participate in the management aspects of the ward
* Perform any other duties relevant to patient care and service requirements as may be directed by the Consultant Psychiatrist
* The post holder may also be required to work in other localities in line with the needs of the service

Person Specification


Qualifications/ Registrations

* MB ChB or equivalent
* Full GMC Registration


Experience

* Exposure to various aspects of General Adult and Community Psychiatry, working as part of a Multidisciplinary Team. Exposure to Risk assessment and crises care
* On call experience in medical and psychiatry wards


Knowledge

* Core medical Knowledge
* Knowledge of psychiatric presentations


Key Skills/Abilities

* Ability to develop & maintain high standards of communication both orally and in writing with people about difficult matters and in difficult situations.
* Ability to prioritise & plan own workload to meet deadlines & competing demands
* Ability to negotiate and influence where appropriate


Personal disposition

* Willing to develop own skills & knowledge & provide information to others to help their development
* Ability to maintain quality in own work and encourage others to do so
* Willingness to travel to different locations to undertake role effectively
