Midlothian Building Standards section is looking for an experienced and motivated individual to fill the role of Senior Building Standards Surveyor within a diverse and professional department.
Midlothian is one of the fastest growing authorities in Scotland, and the Building Standards Team has a key role in the development of the built environment. We strive to provide a supportive consent process with close collaboration between professionals in different service areas and those in the private sector. The post of Senior Building Standards Surveyor will play a key role to facilitate these opportunities whilst ensuring construction works within Midlothian’s geographical area are designed and built to meet relevant standards, further sustainable development and ensure the safety of people in and around buildings.
You would be responsible for processing complex building warrants, supporting line managers in their activities and inspecting dangerous/defective buildings.
Midlothian building standards has recently employed four new team members and you would require to play a key role in the development of both new staff and existing staff. You will also play an integral role in the delivery of improvement projects for the service and maintain high levels of performance and customer satisfaction.
KNOWLEDGE
Chartered membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or Chartered membership of the Association of Building Engineers (CABE) and direct experience in Building Standards.
The post holder should have excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrable organisational, communication and negotiation skills are essential.
The post holder requires an in depth understanding of building technology relevant to the associated legislation and guidance. Experience in public safety matters relative to dangerous and defective buildings is also essential.
Experience in performance management.
A relevant degree qualification is also desirable.

Please note that it is Midlothian Councils policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.
Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £48,370.86 per annum.
Requirements
Compliance with the mandatory Cabinet Office PSN (Public Sector Network) Code of Connection requires the Council to meet a baseline personal security standard. This requires completion of a disclosure check for all employees who can access official information. The fee for this PSN Disclosure check will be met by the council.
Please note that Disclosure Scotland has changed the way certificates are issued. You will be notified by email from Disclosure Scotland that your certificate is available to view. Once you have viewed your certificate you will be allowed to share this with your employer and it is only available for 14 days from the first day you have viewed the certificate. If you do not grant access to Midlothian Council to view before access is removed, a further application will need to be generated, and this will incur an additional cost.
