We are offering a Band 5–6 Development post within Prison Healthcare Services at HMYOI Feltham A. This permanent role provides a clear, supported pathway for a Band 5 nurse to progress to a Band 6 Senior Nurse position on successful completion of required competencies.
We welcome NMC-registered RGN, RCN or RMN applicants who are willing to work across clinical specialities, expand their professional knowledge, and undertake further specialist education, including a School Nurse qualification.
As part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team, you will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care to children and young people in custody. You will gain experience across primary care, long-term conditions, mental health, child development and screening, substance misuse, and urgent or emergency response within a secure setting.
We are seeking nurses who are NMC registered, compassionate, resilient, collaborative, and committed to high-quality, person-centred care, with a strong interest in developing clinical, leadership, and decision-making skills.
Previous primary care or secure environment experience is desirable but not essential. Full training and support will be provided.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will deliver expert, patient-centred healthcare within a secure environment, providing clinical advice and guidance to clinicians, allied health professionals, and patients.
Working as part of an integrated healthcare service spanning Primary Care, Mental Health, and Substance Misuse, and supported by allied professionals, the role includes undertaking physical health assessments, running clinics, delivering and evaluating treatments and interventions, and contributing to the ongoing development of healthcare services.
You will demonstrate sound knowledge of health conditions and treatment options, enabling you to support and guide colleagues on matters relating to physical health and wellbeing, while ensuring consistently high standards of care in a changing healthcare environment where patient need remains central to practice.
The role requires strong partnership working, ensuring healthcare is fully integrated within wider prison services and that effective communication is maintained with internal and external stakeholders. You will promote professionalism within the nursing team, contribute to a positive team culture, confidently challenge poor practice, and support the reduction of siloed working.
Flexible working is essential and includes weekends and unsocial hours. Nights and weekends are a core requirement, although we aim to limit allocation to no more than two weekends and two sets of up to four night shifts per roster period.
Working for our organisation
As a Band 5–6 Development Nurse, you will work through a structured programme of nursing, profession-specific, and service-specific Band 6 competencies, alongside completing all associated training and development requirements.
You will be responsible for maintaining annual statutory and mandatory training, demonstrating safe and effective practice across the full scope of the role, including autonomous clinical working. Regular supervision, mentorship, and support will be provided by your line manager and the wider team, with management and clinical supervision offered every four weeks within the Health and Justice service line.
On successful completion and sign-off of all required competencies, you will progress to a Band 6 Senior Nurse position. Progression is typically achieved within 12–18 months, depending on individual development and readiness.
Newly qualified nurses will also complete the Trust’s 12-month Preceptorship Programme and Band 5 Development Programme alongside their service-specific competency framework.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main Responsibility
1. Plan, deliver and evaluate clinically appropriate interventions using evidenced based guidance and practice.
2. Set up processes/protocols for effective assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for those patients with physical, mental health and substance misuse.
3. Safeguard vulnerable patients in line with CNWL Trust safeguarding policies.
4. Work with the qualified School Nurse(s) in the team to ensure the children and young people in our care are meeting their expected developmental milestones, alongside health and wellbeing screening assessments.
5. Apply local risk assessment and management.
6. Create and record care plans within individual patient records, tailored to the individual patient.
7. Make appropriate referrals to other services for long term or complex care management.
8. Co-ordinate multi-disciplinary clinical practice to provide focused and integrated care treatment programs/packages.
9. Use highly skilled interventions to de-escalate aggressive patient behaviours and be aware of the appropriate processes for dealing with

Research and Audits:
12. Utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice.
13. Assist in audits as per the annual planner or when requested to do so in order to develop and improve service provision.
Teaching, Training and Supervision:
14. Participate in regular clinical and managerial supervision in accordance with professional practice and CNWL guidelines.
15. Participate in a 3 week supernumerary period, working with RGNs, RCNs and RMNs to begin your understanding of the role being delivered as well as the expectations of you.
16. We offer locally arranged teaching sessions every 2 weeks covering varied clinical skills and knowledge.
