Position Overview
As a Part-Time STEMEX Tutor, you'll deliver engaging STEM learning experiences to children aged approximately 4-13+ years (and older where relevant). You will plan, lead, and adapt workshops, tutor small groups or individual learners, and support their learning journey in a patient, supportive, and inclusive way. You'll help cultivate curiosity, build foundational skills, and foster confidence in STEM disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
* Deliver STEM workshops, lessons or tutoring sessions, both in small groups and/or 1-to-1, depending on need.
* Adapt teaching and learning materials to suit different age groups and learning abilities, including SEND learners.
* Encourage hands-on, project-based learning; use educational tools and resources to make complex topics accessible.
* Assess students' understanding periodically, give feedback, and track progress over time.
* Collaborate with other tutors, lead team members, and/or curriculum coordinators to ensure consistency and quality of content.
* Maintain a safe, welcoming, and encouraging learning environment.
* Prepare materials in advance and ensure resources are well organized.
* Communicate with parents or caregivers when necessary about students' progress and learning needs.
Person Specification (Skills & Qualities)
* Strong subject knowledge in one or more STEM disciplines (Science / Maths / Technology / Engineering).
* Prior experience working with children (in teaching, tutoring, mentoring or similar roles). Experience with SEND learners is a strong plus.
* Excellent communication skills; ability to explain ideas clearly, patiently, and adaptively.
* Creativity and innovation in teaching; able to bring STEM topics to life.
* Organisational skills: planning lessons, preparing resources, keeping track of progress.
* Empathy, patience, flexibility; able to adapt approach to individual learners.
* DBS check (or willingness to obtain one); commitment to safeguarding and welfare of children.
Hours & Commitment
* Part-time: flexible hours (after school, weekends, or during school breaks depending on schedule).
* Expected availability of weekends and holidays
* Some commitment for consistency (e.g., weekly or bi-weekly sessions) to support learner progression.
Location
* Sessions delivered at STEMEX centre(s) and/or possibly online or in community locations as needed.
* Travel to STEMEX centre(s) required for in-person sessions.
Remuneration
* Hourly rate: competitive, commensurate with experience.
* Paid per hour.
* Any additional compensation or travel allowance may be provided depending on location / duties.
