Job Description
The Board of Governors wishes to appoint a full-time permanent teacher as Head of History & politics effective from 1 September 2026. The School currently offers History at KS3 and both History and Politics at KS4 and A-level. The substantive staffing complement in the department (including the HoD) is 4 full-time teachers. There is a strong tradition of high-quality teaching in the subject at Glenlola, with excellent external examination results obtained at GCSE, AS and A2 levels. The person appointed will be expected to demonstrate high quality teaching at all key stages, and have outstanding leadership, administrative and interpersonal skills. Full competence in ICT is necessary.
Responsibilities and duties (selected illustrative items from the job description):
* Exercise of general professional duties
* Planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching according to pupils’ educational needs; setting and marking work
* Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
* Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils; providing advice and guidance; communicating with parents and external bodies
* Assessment/Reporting: providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references
* Staff development and professional development: participating in staff development and performance review
* Discipline/Health and Safety: maintaining good order and safeguarding health and safety
* Public Examinations: participating in arrangements for pupil examination preparation and supervision
* Management/Administration: contributing to selection and development of other teachers; coordinating teaching staff; development of courses, materials, programmes and assessment; pastoral arrangements

Person Specification
The role includes essential and desirable criteria across qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills and values. The Selection Panel will shortlist based on how applicants meet these criteria as described in Section 1 and 2 of the original document.
* Qualifications/Professional Membership Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach History as his/her main subject
* Experience Minimum of 3 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching History at Key Stage 3; History and/or Politics at KS4; History and/or Politics at AS and A-level; Demonstrable experience of using a range of teaching strategies to meet learning needs; Demonstrable experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning
* Other Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post

* Knowledge Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum; Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice; SEND Code of Practice; IT systems and digital classroom tools; current assessment methods
* Skills / Abilities Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; collaborative work with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; teamwork and self-motivation
* Values Evidence of alignment with the School’s Values/ethos (information on the school website)

* Ability to teach Government & Politics to GCSE; experience with SEN; monitoring pupil progress, performance, targets and interventions
