Providing the School Crossing Patrol Service is a long-established cornerstone of our road safety work, helping children get to and from their school over busy main roads.
The Role
As a School Crossing Patrol Officer, you would help deliver on the ambitious goals of the Camden Transport Strategy, by assisting children, parents and any vulnerable people to cross the road on the journey to and from a designated school in Camden.
You will work every school day during term time, typically 8.15-9.15pm and 3-4pm.
You will identify and efficiently manage variable traffic conditions and obstructions to ensure safe passage to and from school, as well as report on localised highways issues that might affect residents as well as the comfort and safety of people journeying to and from school.
You will be provided with a personal hi-vis jacket, cap and gloves to wear while working which can be kept on site. The role will provide you with the opportunity to contribute to the Council’s knowledge about the local area and provide ideas for improvement to continually increase pedestrian safety and road safety more generally, in the borough.
The postholder may be required to undertake other relevant duties as required by the line manager that are commensurate with the grade/role.
About You
We are looking for a person with a strong commitment to carry out the duties of a School Crossing Patrol Officer, and pride themselves on being reliable to carry out the role every school day. You will have the ability and fitness to be able to work on your feet for an hour twice a day and in all weather conditions, with the protective clothing provided. You will be resourceful in managing variable traffic conditions, and resolute in carrying out the duties of the job when encountering a wide variety of road users in the area. You will carry out your duties with care for the children and due regard for other road users, providing the school community with a reassuring presence on the road.You will be flexible in providing emergency cover for another designated school crossing patrol location.
Essential Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
* Ability to be a reliable, reassuring, forceful presence in the road when managing a wide variety of road users and behaviours.
* Appropriate level of physical fitness to be able to work on your feet two hours every day
* Knowledge of the rules of the road
* Good level of inter-personal skills, particularly with school children and families
* Ability to pass a DBS check (previously known as a Criminal Record check)
