An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Environmental Services, Refuse Team for a Refuse Collector on our waste collection service.
You will work within a team of refuse collection operatives, assisting in the safe operation of a refuse vehicle and providing a high standard refuse collection service to residents of the East Riding.
Your responsibilities include collecting household, industrial, and commercial waste from various locations, such as domestic and commercial properties, and schools.
You will transport wheeled bins, plastic sacks, or bulk containers to the refuse collection vehicle from the premises or back door of designated properties, then fully empty the contents into the vehicle without causing damage, noise, or spillage. You will ensure the street is left clear of rubbish, replace bins at the collection point without obstructing footpaths or entrances, and be willing to cover other streetscene services as needed.
A suitable level of fitness is required, including the ability to walk for at least 5 hours a day and to move loaded wheeled bins. The role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions and starting early in the morning. Initiative, good customer care, and communication skills are essential.
You may need to work overtime or on weekends to catch up on refuse/recycling services after bank holidays, vehicle breakdowns, or weather disruptions. Occasionally, work on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank/Public Holidays will be required, with appropriate enhancements paid. The role also involves working between Christmas and New Year.
The position is based at the Willerby depot, but good knowledge of other areas within the East Riding is advantageous.
