As a Principal Highways Engineer in our Highways and Active Travel team, you will be pivotal in implementing ideas that shape the future of how we move. We work on major projects across the UK, such as the A9 Dualling, the A83 Rest and Be Thankful, George Street and St. Andrew Square Regeneration, East Airdrie Link Road, Borders Greenway, Lower Thames Crossing and the Eastwood Active Travel Network, along with a broad portfolio of local transport projects with Local Authorities and Contractors. Your work will contribute to high‑quality designs across new build, renewal, maintenance and assessment works.
Your role
* Provide technical guidance on highways and/or active travel engineering projects.
* Mentor and coach team members and take responsibility for the technical development of staff.
* Resolve engineering problems and develop works cost estimates.
* Check, review and oversee the work of others.
* Liaise with key clients and discuss design/technical solutions to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
* Coordinate with Practice Managers to ensure projects are adequately resourced.
* Delegate work, program deliverables and monitor progress.
* Identify and respond to commercial risks and opportunities.
* Support business development by representing the company at networking events, preparing bids and tenders, and maintaining relationships with existing and prospective clients.
About You
* BEng, MEng in Civil Engineering or a professional qualification at Chartered or Incorporated Engineer Level.
* Experience or knowledge of design and the design process for highways and active travel schemes.
* Proven ability to advise clients on technical matters.
* Proven ability to coach and develop team members.
* Willingness to work flexibly to deliver projects on time and on budget.
* Experience in project management and/or highways discipline management.
* Experience in pricing and bidding on tender opportunities.
* Self‑motivated and able to work independently as well as within a larger multi‑discipline team, directing and managing packages of work to completion.
