Job Title: DEVELOPMENT CHEMIST Job Role The role of a Development Chemist is to develop new products and make improvements to existing products in accordance with product briefs. Working within the formulation team they will take ownership for a set of projects from concept to approval, working collaboratively with the NPD team to ensure an efficient development process. They will also work closely with the Scale Up team to ensure a smooth transition from lab to factory and achieve right first time manufacture. The role involves assisting in all aspects of the technical function, ensuring that strict quality standards are met and contributing to the process of Continuous Improvement as well as supporting the training and mentoring of new starts and Development Technicians. Key Responsibilities Collaborate with NPD and customers to discuss new product requirements considering brand standards, consumer needs and regulatory requirements. Manage own projects, setting priorities in conjunction with the Technical Manager or Head of Innovation, maintaining a project tracker and communicating project status and risk to stakeholders. Design and develop efficacious & commercially viable formulations in the Laboratory in accordance with product briefs. Prepare formulation batches, presentations and submission paperwork, maintaining accurate records. Ensure formulations are developed in an efficient way, utilising knowledge of formulation types and ingredients and in accordance with business sourcing policies. Define and execute appropriate testing on all products to confirm that they meet specification and performance criteria. Review and approve stability, compatibility and microbiological records. Work alongside the scale up team to ensure a smooth transition from Lab to Production. Writing and training of SOP’s & WI’s. Ensure that staff training and development is carried out as required. Enforcing compliance to Health & Safety standards, GMP, GLP and ISO requirements. Building good relationships with Suppliers. Keep up to date with legislation requirements. Record, monitor and report on KPIs as indicated by line manager. Support the Scale up and QC teams with problem solving and quality investigations. Any other duties requested by the Technical Manager to support the smooth operation of the department. Role Requirements Educated to degree level, or equivalent in a scientific discipline. A minimum of 1 years’ experience of formulation of cosmetic products. Knowledge of formulation types, ingredient roles and industry regulations. Knowledge of manufacturing capabilities and limitations, and vessel types. Strong attention to detail, accurate record keeping, project tracking and KPI measurement. Ability to prioritise, multi-task and identify efficiencies to manage a busy workload. A solution focussed approach is critical. The ability to interact with stakeholders in a strong, confident manner. Presentation skills are an advantage. Proficient in Excel, Powerpoint, Email and the ability to use a technical database (training will be given).
