Overview

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery with a subspecialty interest in the management of foot and ankle trauma. The role provides an opportunity to develop an elective foot and ankle practice including ankle arthroplasty. The on-call responsibility for this post will include participation in polytrauma cover during weekdays (1 in 16) and a 1 in 12 weekend. The appointee will perform orthopaedic trauma surgery with a subspecialty interest in the management of foot and ankle trauma, fracture clinics (including virtual), ward rounds, trauma operating, elective operating and other roles necessary to support the department. Elective surgery is undertaken at the SOTC, which is a GIRFT accredited HVLC Hub. The appointee is expected to be committed to the improvement of quality clinical care and to participate in incident reporting, risk management and Clinical Unit Governance Meetings which are held every other month.


Responsibilities

* Undertaking administrative duties associated with patient care; work with all members of the clinical team in theatres, clinics and wards; day-to-day management of patients; liaison with trauma nurse practitioners and participation in meetings; undertake and be up to date with mandatory training; observe the rules and policies together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations; ensure strict confidentiality of patient and staff information.
* On-call commitment: trauma on-call cover weekdays at the RSCH MTC site with off-site cover when on call and PRH NOF on-call rota weekends (3% Category A).

Qualifications

* Essential: Basic medical degree
* Essential: FRCS Orth or its recognised equivalent
* Essential: Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview. If you trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Orthopaedics or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date. If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT (Equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC).
* Desirable: Higher Degree; BSc; MSc; MS


Clinical Skills and Experience

* Essential: Minimum of 12 months fellowship experience in foot and ankle surgery
* Essential: Minimum of 12 months experience in major trauma centre with 6 months at post-CCT fellowship level
* Desirable: Evidence of a commitment to research


Organisation and Planning

* Essential: Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
* Essential: Understanding of NHS, clinical governance, and resource constraints
* Desirable: Evidence of managerial skills (achievements or courses attended)
