Specialty physiotherapist - acute general medicine

We are looking for a dynamic and forward‑thinking Band 7 Physiotherapist with a specialist interest in older people to join our supportive and friendly integrated Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


Key Responsibilities

* Conduct comprehensive assessments of older patients and deliver interventions to optimise recovery during acute hospital stay, preparing them to return home.
* Apply evidence‑based knowledge across neurology, trauma, musculoskeletal and respiratory areas related to ageing, falls and frailty.
* Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and external teams; act as team lead or member.
* Develop and audit service delivery, contributing to strategic planning of the Therapy Service for older people.
* Supervise and teach recently registered professionals, support workers, therapy students and other MDT members.
* Lead evidence‑based projects, implement changes within Acute General Medicine and Gerontology wards, and set and monitor standards of practice.
* Participate in extended hours and seven‑day roster to maximise access to older adult rehabilitation.
* Deputise in service lead duties, implement workforce strategy, recruit staff, and manage staffing including appraisal.


Clinical Responsibilities (Detailed)

* Take professional and legal responsibility for all aspects of own professional activities.
* Assess patients as an autonomous practitioner, including highly complex presentations.
* Analyse clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses and develop comprehensive treatment plans.
* Continuously evaluate and modify treatments.
* Provide capacity assessments, obtain informed consent, and work within legal frameworks.
* Coordinate multidisciplinary interventions and educate patients, carers, relatives, and health professionals.
* Communicate complex information effectively to patients and staff; address barriers such as language or communication disorders.
* Collaborate with other therapists, medical, nursing, social work and other health professionals.
* Attend meetings, seminars, case conferences and maintain confidential patient care.
* Motivate and persuade others using advanced communication skills; provide written and electronic information.
* Handle distressing circumstances sensitively and support junior staff in challenging patient management.
* Maintain accurate written records, including progress and discharge reports.


Management Responsibilities

* Develop and implement policy and service changes across General Medicine and Gerontology wards.
* Ensure staff comply with and implement policy changes; support the organisation of weekend rosters.
* Respond to national initiatives, policy and research within clinical governance.
* Implement equipment maintenance and ensure competency use.
* Manage daily staffing and supervision, including appraisal.
* Provide statistical and analysis reports accurately and timely.


Education Responsibilities

* Teach peers, junior staff, therapy students and external professional groups.
* Develop and maintain CPD portfolio and support team professional development.
* Provide training to undergraduate and postgraduate students and liaise with academic institutions.
* Communicate complex knowledge of techniques, biomechanics, anatomy and physiology.


Research and Audit Responsibilities

* Develop and supervise ongoing audits and research/evaluation projects with Medicine and Gerontology.
* Present evidence‑based projects to the department.
* Keep updated with evidence‑based practice and national standards.
* Participate in research projects and clinical trials as required.


General Responsibilities

* Carry out therapy assessments and treatments requiring moderate physical effort daily.
* Adhere to Manual Handling Policy and local therapeutic handling guidelines.
* Operate within a flexible environment with frequent demands from patients, staff and students.
* Adhere to Trust policies, Health and Safety regulations, Universal Precautions and Infection Control measures.
* Participate in Trust Appraisal Scheme as appraiser and appraisee.
* Attend departmental staff meetings and peer group meetings.


Qualifications and Experience

Band 7 physiotherapist licence with a specialist interest in older people, ageing, falls and frailty.


Working Arrangements

Part‑time and job share are considered.
