Overview
We have an exciting new opportunity for someone to join the Clinical Infection Research Group (CIRG) as a post-doctoral research associate. We are looking for someone with a strong interest in the field of immunology. The role involves regular travel to coordinate tech-transfer and immunoassay enhancement at the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM.
The post holder will work on a Wellcome Trust funded project identifying and validating Strep A correlates of protection in a human challenge study to support vaccine development. In this role you will be expected to develop, validate, and perform immunological assays using samples collected from clinical cohorts, and analyse and write up the results. You will be encouraged to support and train others, including laboratory scientists from collaborating institutions.
As the successful applicant, you will work closely with research teams led by Prof Thushan de Silva. This is a fixed term post until the end of February 2028.
Main Duties And Responsibilities
* Manage own academic research and administrative activities, guided by the PI and co-PIs. This involves small scale project management, to coordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.
* Develop, optimise, and validate immunoassays for Strep A and lead the establishment of these assays in the Gambia in collaboration with onsite teams.
* Perform exploratory assays to enhance the breadth of candidate correlates for future evaluation.
* Directly testing correlates of naturally induced protection against Strep A.
* Make detailed experimental observations and provide critical input on experimental designs and approaches.
* Gather, analyse, and present scientific data from the study, and provide regular updates to the PIs and research collaborators.
* Prepare, present and contribute to regular lab meetings, group- and departmental- scientific meetings.
* Contribute ideas for new research projects, develop ideas for generating research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers.
* Collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and lead the writing of research papers in high quality, international journals, also present papers and posters at local, national and international meetings.
* Act as a source of information and advice, as well as providing guidance and training to other members of the group and visitors on scientific protocols and experimental techniques.
* Take responsibility for the maintenance and ‘good’ running of laboratory equipment within the group providing training and advice when required.
* Monitor and maintain a safe working environment in accordance with Health and Safety procedures.
* Work flexibly across laboratories as required, including local departments and periods of work overseas.
* Maintain a regularly updated knowledge of the relevant research literature and attend meetings to keep abreast of developments in the field of research.
* Any other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Essential criteria
* Have a PhD in immunology or equivalent field, or be in a position to have submitted within 3 months (assessed at application)
* Experience in working on human immunology studies characterising immune responses to infections and/or vaccines (assessed at interview)
* Possess sufficient specialist knowledge of a breadth of immunological techniques, especially in set up and validation of new assays independently (assessed at interview)
* Excellent academic track record including publications and presentations at national/international conferences (assessed at application)
* Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, report writing skills, experience of delivering presentations (assessed at interview)
* Ability to work constructively and effectively within an international team and with overseas collaborators (assessed at interview)
* Experience of developing and maintaining a network of contacts and form positive working relationships with a wide range of people (assessed at interview)
* Experience of adapting own skills to new circumstances (assessed at interview)
* Excellent interpersonal skills and understanding the needs of stakeholders of different cultural background (assessed at interview)
Desirable criteria
* Experience of supervising PhD, MSc, or undergraduate students (assessed at application)
