Job Type: Full-time | Permanent
Salary: £45,000 – £65,000 (DOE)
Role Overview
An exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to take a lead role in the design and integration of powertrain systems into next-generation Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) platforms.
This position will see you drive both concept and detailed design, ensuring engine systems are integrated safely and efficiently within airframes. You will play a key role in shaping innovative propulsion solutions that meet demanding aerospace performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the design and development of UAV engine integration systems.
* Produce CAD models and detailed technical drawings using SolidWorks and PDM tools.
* Design engine mounts, vibration isolation systems, cooling baffles, cowlings, exhausts, and power take-off assemblies.
* Conduct structural and vibration analyses using FEA; apply calculations for loads and stresses.
* Collaborate across disciplines including airframe, autopilot, manufacturing, testing, and quality assurance.
* Guide and mentor junior engineers while embedding best practice and continuous improvement.
* Ensure compliance with aerospace standards and manage risk, cost, and schedule impacts.
* Support prototype testing, validation, and documentation of integrated systems.
Key Deliverables
* Engine mounting frames and fuselage attachment designs.
* Engine vibration isolation systems.
* Packaging of ancillary systems (fuel, exhaust, electronics, wiring looms).
* Cooling solutions including cylinder/head baffles and airflow-optimised cowlings.
* Reduction drive brackets and power-take-off/propeller mounting solutions.
What You’ll Bring
* Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering; further study or professional accreditation desirable.
* Experience in mechanical design, ideally within aerospace, automotive, or UAV sectors.
* Expertise in SolidWorks (including PDM) with strong 3D CAD proficiency.
* Hands-on experience with FEA (structural/vibration analysis); CFD exposure beneficial.
* Background in the design of rotating/reciprocating machinery such as combustion engines or transmissions.
* Strong knowledge of materials, manufacturing, and processes including fabrication, machining, and casting.
* Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and leadership skills.
* Passion for aerospace and UAV technology.
