Overview
Theatres & Medirooms Porter Band 2 – North Bristol NHS Trust. The Theatres & Medirooms at North Bristol NHS Trust are recruiting for enthusiastic people to join our Theatres & Medirooms Portering Team. The team provides a professional, efficient, effective and timely service to patients, visitors and departments within the Anaesthesia, Surgery, Critical Care & Renal Division. On a typical day you may transport patients between departments, move equipment between theatres and medirooms, collect and deliver essential supplies and samples, undertake messenger duties, collect and dispose of waste, and assist with patient trolleys and beds. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responding to emergencies and work to support patient flow and safety.
You will be willing to work collaboratively within the team and be confident to carry out individual duties as delegated. Interacting with a large number of patients daily, you will contribute to making their stay as comfortable as possible with a friendly and compassionate service. Experience in this role is beneficial but not essential as full training is provided. The service operates 24/7, including weekends, nights and bank holidays.
Responsibilities
The Theatres & Medirooms Porter will be required to:

Person Specification
Essential
* Numeracy and Literacy Level 1 or equivalent
* Evidence of full-time education achievements
* IT skills: basic word processing, email and data collection
* Willingness to undertake appropriate training for required clinical activities
* Experience of working in a health or social care setting (desirable)
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Time management and prioritising skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Accurate documentation skills
* Awareness of healthcare policies and procedures

Working Conditions / Effort
Works in the operating department as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.
* Dependant on shifts; rotate between perioperative areas (medi-rooms and theatres).
* Work with COSHH regulated chemicals and wear PPE.
* Manual handling requirements.
* Unpredictable workload with potential for emergency situations.
* Occasional exposure to potentially aggressive or distressing situations.
Pre-Operative, Intra-Operative and Post-Operative Phases
Pre-operative phase The porter will assist Registered Theatre Practitioners in maintaining the clinical environment and supporting theatre efficiency by:
* Supporting theatre/medi-room turnaround to maintain patient flow and efficiency.
* Acting as messenger and transporting equipment/materials safely; completing documentation per Trust policies (including handling Automated Guided Vehicles).
* Ensuring patient trolleys are safe and equipment is ready for transport; reporting defects.
* Assisting in safe transfer/movement of patients between theatre complex and departments.
* Transferring patients between perioperative areas and clinical departments/in-patient areas.
* Re-stocking clinical areas; removing damaged items and reporting to practitioners.
* Transporation of SSD, consumables and equipment within theatre/medi-room environments and wider Trust as required.
Intra-operative phase The porter assists the clinical team in maintaining patient safety and theatre efficiency by:
* Carrying out delegated duties within guidance of Registered Theatre Practitioners.
* Working with the wider multi-disciplinary team to support patient care.
* Ensuring theatre equipment is clean and available for use.
* Reporting deficits, breakages, or sterility problems to portering supervisors or Clinical Coordinator.
* Assisting in patient positioning and transfer pre- and post-surgery using safe manual handling.
* Transferring clinical specimens to the correct department with appropriate documentation.
* Collecting blood for elective lists and emergencies and returning unused blood/products to the blood bank.
* Assisting with other delegated tasks within training and competence limits.
* Assisting with theatre turnover between patients to support flow and efficiency.
Post-operative phase The porter will:
* Assist with preparation of medi-rooms to receive patients pre- and post-surgery.
* Transfer patients between inpatient areas/departments as required.
* Transport equipment and materials safely with documentation per Trust requirements.
* Support medi-room turnaround between patients to maximise efficiency.
* Carry out decontamination of the environment and equipment per Trust policies and national guidelines.
* Provide daily maintenance and cleaning checks on patient trolleys.
* Transport medical gases as required and per Trust guidance.
