Primary and secondary SEN (Special Educational Needs) provisions in Andover and the surrounding areas are seeking experienced Teaching Assistants, particularly those with a background in supporting pupils with autism, learning difficulties, communication needs, and sensory differences. These schools cater for children and young people who require structured, personalised support to access learning and develop essential life and social skills.





About the Pupils and Their Needs

You will be working with pupils who may experience:

* Autism spectrum conditions, including communication differences, sensory sensitivities, and a need for routine

* Moderate to severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD)

* Speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN)

* Difficulties with social interaction or understanding social cues

* Cognitive delays that impact working memory, processing speed, and retention

* Sensory processing challenges, including overload, shutdowns, or avoidance

* Anxiety related to transitions, unfamiliar tasks, or changes in routine

These pupils benefit from patient, consistent, and highly structured support. You will play a vital role in helping them develop independence, communication skills, confidence, and a positive sense of belonging within the school environment.





Role Responsibilities

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and other support staff to:

* Provide 1:1 and small-group support tailored to individual learning needs

* Implement structured learning programmes and scaffold tasks appropriately

* Use visual supports, sensory strategies, and communication aids (e.g., PECS, Makaton)

* Support pupils during moments of sensory or emotional overwhelm using calm, regulated approaches

* Encourage social communication, interaction, and independent learning skills

* Assist with personal care routines where required

* Help maintain predictable, low-arousal classroom environments

* Contribute to EHCP targets, learning journals, and ongoing SEN assessments

* Full-time and part-time positions available

* Term-time only

* Training opportunities provided (e.g., autism strategies, communication methods, sensory regulation)

* Pay dependent on experience and the specific setting

* Location: Andover and surrounding areas

Requirements

* Enhanced Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain)

* Right to work in the UK

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
