Job overview

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to join our dynamic and supportive team. As a Band 7 Acute Oncology CNS, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality care to patients with acute oncology needs, providing expert clinical advice, and ensuring the effective management for patients with SACT related complications and some oncological emergencies.

You will work in close collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide seamless care, support patients during their cancer treatment, and manage complex cases across the acute setting. This role will offer you the opportunity to contribute to the development and enhancement of acute oncology nursing service.


Main duties of the job

Whilst being an essential team player, you will need to be able to work autonomously and be able to prioritise, assess and recommend plans of care with the wider Acute Oncology and responsible treating teams.

You will be expected to triage emergency phone calls via the Oncology Helpline and assess/ review urgent patients.

Provision of care to be undertaken through clinics, ambulatory
care with in the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre, Emergency Department and in the ward setting

To provide patients with Personalised Care and support Planning using Macmillan Holistic Needs Assessments.

You will have advanced communication skills to provide support to patients and their patients/carers/ families and other members of the multidisciplinary team


There will be an opportunities for further education including completing the non-medical prescribing qualification/ clinical assessment qualification if not already undertaken.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Provide expert clinical support to patients with cancer, including managing oncological emergencies and symptoms.
* Deliver direct patient care, ensuring holistic assessments, personalised care plans, and patient education.
* Lead the development and delivery of the acute oncology service, ensuring best practices are followed.
* Offer guidance and education to nursing and medical teams on acute oncology conditions and treatments.
* Participate in audits and research initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and service delivery.
* Provide leadership in acute oncology management, supporting patients, their families, and the multidisciplinary team.
* Lead and contribute to the continuous improvement of patient care pathways and clinical protocols.

Qualifications


Essential criteria

* Registered nurse 1st level with current NMC registration
* Advanced Communication Skills
* Teaching/education qualification


Desirable criteria

* Level 2 psychology
* Independent prescribing qualification or working towards
* Clinical assessment qualification
* Masters level study or working towards masters level


Experience


Essential criteria

* Experience of caring for patients in the Cancer setting (Either Haematology or Oncology).
* or/and Experience in Acute Medicine or Emergency Medicine.
* Experience of leadership in recent clinical role.


Desirable criteria

* Experience of recognising and managing the complications of SACT
* Experience in the care of patients with Cancer of Unknown Primary
* Excellent teaching and training skills
* Ability to deal with stressful situations
