Are you passionate and committed about making a difference to pregnant people and families? We are seeking a midwife with experience of providing care for pregnant people.
The Northwest of England Maternal Medicine Network covers three local maternity systems: Greater Manchester and East Cheshire (GMEC), Cheshire & Mersey (C&M) and Lancashire and South Cumbria (L&SC).
The post-holder will work alongside and under the guidance of the lead midwife for maternal medicine and the MDT team, from the specialist Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital. Working in collaboration with the lead midwife and a team of Obstetricians, you will support the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards. You will work together with the lead midwife, to deliver woman centred care and advice, support and care for women and their families with pre-existing medical conditions throughout the perinatal period.
You will be able to work independently, safely, effectively and collaboratively. We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated midwife to join the team on a secondment for up to 12 months.
Main duties of the job
You will work alongside and under the guidance of the Lead midwife for maternal medicine, in a capacity as a B6 midwife. You will be supported to work as an autonomous practitioner and appropriately provide advice and support to women with pre-existing complex medical conditions or co-morbidities, their families in collaboration with other health care professionals.
You will be supported to actively foster links with other clinical areas involved in providing complex care and will work alongside other support agencies participating in the care of women and families. You will work alongside the lead midwife and be supported to participate in the development of guidelines and operating procedures, evaluating national and local clinical standards, ensuring that clinical practice is evidence-based and bench marked against best practice locally, regionally and nationally.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties to include, but not be limited to:
• Provide professional midwifery care in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Professional Code of Conduct/Rules and Standards.
• Work effectively a variety of maternity care settings providing accessible and flexible services.
• Develop innovative approaches to care to meet the needs of women and their families.
• Use high quality evidence based to provide care
• Work with the Maternal Medicine Lead Midwife care for women and service users seen by the Maternal Medicine Centre, reflecting local and national guidance and agenda.
• Work alongside the Maternal Medicine Lead Midwife to provide specialist midwifery advice within the Maternal Medicine Centres.
• Implement, monitor and facilitate remedial action when necessary, and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of care, including those standards defined in the NHS long-term plan and Ockenden recommendations.
• Maintain a safe working environment, ensure the safe use and efficient management of equipment and supplies.
• Promote evidence-based practice in line with local and national guidance.
• The role will encompass national guidance such as adhering to Continuity of Carer principles, personalisation, and clinical guidance such as Saving Babies Lives
• Be accountable for your own professional practice.
• Provide midwifery care for preconception advice and support, for early pregnancy, and provision of a triage service.
• Always act as an advocate for women and service users.
• Empower women to make informed choices about all aspects of their pregnancy, birth and postnatal care
• Participate and facilitate innovative parent education programmes with a focus on and increasing confidence in early parenting skills, including infant feeding practices.
• Participate in governance and risk management activities including attendance at professional groups and meetings, guideline development, reporting of clinical incidents, research, and clinical audit activities.
• Recognise limits to own role and abilities and seek support where appropriate.
• Participate in continuing professional development requirements.
• Adhere to appropriate frameworks to achieve compliance with safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
• Ensure that you are familiar with and adheres to the Trust safeguarding polices.
• Ensure public health principles are embedded in care provided, to contribute to the improvement of each woman’s and her family’s health status.
• Promote a culture of collaboration with team members and other teams as required.

Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
1. Experience of providing women centred care
2. Awareness of changes and challenges within Midwifery practice
3. Awareness of national guidelines around maternal medicine
4. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
5. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
6. Demonstrates effective listening skills and communication skills.
7. Confident in teaching and assessing student midwives, midwives and doctors.
8. Ability to implement changes within midwifery practise.

9. Experience of working in a midwifery team, supporting women with complex needs
10. Evidence of knowledge of ethical issues
11. Experience of working in a variety of maternity settings/environments

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
14. Registered Midwife with valid NMC registration
15. Practice assessor qualification or willingness to work towards
16. Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 midwives
