<div><p>Data Protection Adviser</p><p>Location: Bristol, Swansea, Leeds, Nottingham, Newcastle, Oldham, Birmingham or Yeading (Hayes)</p><p>Salary: £35,663 Per annum</p><p>Vacancy Type: Permanent</p><p>Closing Date: 21st of June 2026</p><h3>Job Description</h3><p>In this role, you will advise DVSA on compliance with privacy legislation, in particular the Data Protection Act 2018, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other data privacy legislation. You will ensure that relevant policy and procedure is in place and implemented to enable compliance internally within DVSA and externally, for example within our supply chain or other organisations through data protection clauses within contracts and data sharing agreements.</p><p>You will also ensure that DVSAs staff are well informed about the requirements of data protection law, and in conjunction with other team members ensure that staff have an understanding of the law and other relevant legislation, requirements and guidance. You will promote best practice in the handling and use of personal data within DVSA.</p><p>Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:</p><ul><li>Provide assistance to information asset owners on carrying out data protection impact assessments, approving the data protection compliance check and making risk-based recommendations.</li><li>Provide assistance to information asset owners on the creation of privacy notices and data sharing agreements to ensure compliance with legislation.</li><li>Respond to rights requests and Freedom of Information internal reviews.</li><li>Manage any data protection incidents - assessing impact to individuals and notifying relevant parties.</li><li>Provide data protection advice and guidance to all parts of DVSA, external organisations and the supply chain.</li><li>Support Commercial colleagues and Contract Managers in ensuring data protection clauses are embedded within contracts.</li><li>Provide training and guidance on data protection law to DVSA colleagues and other stakeholders.</li><li>Manage data protection compliance throughout DVSA by carrying out assessments against the Information Commissioners Accountability Framework.</li><li>Work with Traffic Commissioners and others to ensure data protection compliance taking into account data controller and data processor relationship.</li></ul><h3>Benefits</h3><ul><li>Employer pension contribution of 28.97% of your salary.</li><li>25 days annual leave, increasing by 1 day each year of service (up to a maximum of 30 days annual leave), plus 8 bank holidays and a privilege day for the Kings birthday.</li><li>Flexible working options that encourage a great work‑life balance.</li></ul><h3>Open Sessions</h3><p>If you would like to find out more about the role, the team and what its like to work in our department, we are organising an open session where you can virtually meet the team on 15th June at 12 noon.</p><h3>Person Specification</h3><ul><li>High quality communication and drafting skills.</li><li>Able to negotiate with senior staff and external organisations, such as other government departments, supply chain and private sector.</li><li>Understanding of data protection legislation and how to interpret it.</li><li>Experience of working in a data protection environment with application of data protection law and considerable experience of supporting DPIAs and providing advice and guidance on data sharing or data processing within the supply chain.</li></ul><h3>Additional Information</h3><p>Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements:</p><p>Full time roles consist of 37 hours per week.</p><p>Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part‑time basis, there is a business requirement for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week.</p></div>
