Biomedical Scientist – Blood Sciences
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our friendly, dedicated, and expanding team of professionals as a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist in our busy Blood Sciences laboratory at Weston General Hospital.
The post holder will be part of a team providing a Blood Sciences service to the Trust, covering Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion. The team comprises Medical Laboratory Assistants, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners, Biomedical Scientists, clerical staff and medical staff.
The successful applicant will play a proactive role in maintaining analytical quality and clinical urgency, including taking appropriate action when abnormal results are found to support patient care. The role requires participation in a 24/7 shift system (day, late, night, weekends and bank holidays) as scheduled.
Responsibilities
* Plan and execute analytical tests across Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion.
* Maintain analytical quality, manage urgent samples, and act on abnormal pathology results.
* Provide training and development for staff within the department.
* Support the implementation of new equipment and managed service contracts.
* Work within a rota‑based schedule of 37.5 hours per week, with shifts balancing to the contractual time.
Qualifications and Experience
* BSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science.
* HCPC registration.
* Evidence of CPD.
* Operational experience in an NHS Haematology/BT/Biochemistry laboratory.
* Understanding and commitment to quality standards, confidentiality, and document management systems (e.g., Q-Pulse).
* Basic keyboard skills and proficiency in Microsoft Windows/Word/Excel.
Skills and Abilities
* Competence to perform analytical tests and problem‑solve.
* Ability to plan own work and prioritise urgent duties.
* Excellent organisational, communication and multi‑tasking skills.

Selected candidates will demonstrate the above experience, qualifications and skills, and will possess the capacity to work within a dynamic, high‑workload laboratory environment.
Salary
£32,073 to £39,043 a year (pro rata for part‑time roles). Closing date 11 May 2026.
