Overview

Deputy Ward Lead (SMH Band 6) – Inpatient Unit at St. Michael’s Hospice (North Hampshire).

* Hours: 37.5 hours per week worked over a 4-week rostered period
* Salary: £37,183 - £44,774 FTE

We are looking for an experienced leader with a passion for developing staff and delivering high-quality palliative care within a specialist hospice setting.


Responsibilities

* Work alongside the IPU Lead to ensure the safe, effective and efficient running of the in-patient unit.
* Collaborate with the wider multi-disciplinary team to provide holistic care addressing physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
* Contribute to service improvement and promote best practice in end-of-life care.
* Regularly assume the nurse in charge role and ensure smooth operational and effective shift running.
* Support junior staff in developing skills for the role.
* Proactively manage staffing rosters to maintain safe clinical staffing and appropriate skill mix.
* Provide leadership, guidance and evaluation of individualised patient care.
* Provide clinical expertise in symptom management within the specialty.
* Support staff performance management, including annual appraisals and performance reviews (with IPU Lead).
* Engage in continual learning and Quality Improvement initiatives.


Qualifications and Experience

* Experience in team management with a track record of developing staff to their full potential.
* Passion and enthusiasm for palliative care and specialist hospice services.
* Ideally experience in a hospice ward; applicants with palliative/end-of-life care experience in other settings are welcome.
* Flexible approach to leadership, management, and clinical responsibilities.
* Strong communication, interpersonal skills and a team-player attitude with mentoring focus.
* Evidence of clinical leadership and managerial skills and experience.
* Ability to work shifts across long days, including day and night shifts (07:30-20:00 and 19:30-08:00). 37.5 hours per week over a 4-week roster, including weekends and nights.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of vulnerable adults, children and young people. Successful candidates will undergo DBS and reference checks prior to starting.
