Job overview
As a Maternity Care Assistant you make a valuable and important contribution to the delivery of high‑quality healthcare to the antenatal ward and day care area. Your role is to support the registered professional in the delivery of safe, effective care to patients and their families. The maternity care assistant is part of the care team that ensures pregnant women and people have a positive experience whilst in antenatal services. The successful post holder will act as a role model to others and demonstrate NUTH’s trust values.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will ensure the ward is well stocked with vital consumables and supplies, that all equipment is cleaned to the highest standard following local infection control policies and remains in good working order. The role also includes reporting any faults or failures to the relevant departments and providing a friendly face and support to patients during their stay.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Maternity Care Assistant (MCA) supports a close supervision of a midwife, nurse or practitioner, carries out basic care tasks and routine care for women and their babies, following care programmes.
* Works as part of the wider multidisciplinary team carrying out housekeeping, administration and personal care of mothers and babies; maintains a friendly, nurturing, and welcoming environment and promotes continuity of care.
* Is an effective member of the multi‑disciplinary team assisting the ward/department to maintain a safe, clean and comfortable environment for patients, families and visitors.
* Reports any concerns regarding the patient’s condition to the qualified midwife.
* Maintains patient privacy and dignity at all times.
* Reports to the midwife in charge any issues that may prevent cleaning or compromise safety.
* Actively contributes to the provision of nutrition for the patients on the ward/department.
* May undertake administrative and clinical duties as required.
* Abides by Trust policies and procedures.
Person specification
Qualifications & Education
* NVQ Level 2 qualification in an appropriate subject or equivalent experience.
* GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) or willingness to undertake Level 2 functional skills within 12 months.
* Care Certificate or commitment to complete a care certificate within 12 months.
Knowledge & Experience
* Understanding of basic food hygiene concepts.
* Basic knowledge of infection, prevention and control.
* Understanding of confidentiality.
* Experience of previously working in a health‑care setting.
* Understanding of basic safeguarding.
* Experience of working within a team.
Experience
* Ability to work effectively under direct supervision, as part of the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Experience of previously working in a health‑care setting.
Skills & Abilities
* Basic IT skills.
* Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with service users and their families, with varying levels of understanding.
