Interim Deputy Director of Finance

The Deputy Director of Finance is responsible for managing management accounts, financial accounting, procurement, and operational and statutory financial reporting, supporting the university’s strategic plan 2030. The role involves providing leadership, collaborating with academic and professional services, and ensuring financial systems and processes align with institutional goals.
The post will be part of the Senior Leadership Team, and will report into the Executive Director of Finance, who is part of the Executive Leadership Team.
Key Responsibilities
The position entails overseeing financial accounting integrity, preparing forecasts, managing key funding sources, supporting business planning, and leading the production of statutory accounts. The Deputy acts as a primary contact for external audits, ensures compliance with regulatory and legislative requirements, and supports financial management across schools and services. Leadership includes managing the finance team, driving efficiency, and fostering continuous improvement, with a focus on accuracy, transparency, and effective resource use. Immediate focus would be the budget planning cycle, year-end, and operational team management.
Person Specification:
Candidates must be qualified accountants (CCAB recognised), with relevant experience within a UK Higher Education setting. They should possess advanced management knowledge, experience in planning, liaising with senior staff and external agencies, and analysing complex data. Desirable attributes include postgraduate qualifications, broad finance management experience, and familiarity with HE systems. Skills required include excellent communication, problem-solving, influencing, and change management, alongside high organisation and innovation.
