Job Summary
As an Associate Data Engineer at IBM Consulting UK FutureNow, you will design, build, and maintain data pipelines and architectures that transform raw data into reliable insights for analysts, data scientists, and business teams. Your work will support high‑profile hybrid cloud and AI programmes across public and private sectors.
Responsibilities
* Design, build, and maintain data integration pipelines that connect multiple systems and data sources.
* Work with agentic and prompt engineering tools such as IBM Consulting Advantage & IBM BoB to augment data engineering responsibilities.
* Use data transformation tools to extract, transform, and load data for reporting, AI, and digital use cases.
* Collaborate with cross‑functional teams of data scientists, platform engineers, and business analysts to achieve project goals.
* Embed data into diverse platform technologies including vector databases for generative or agentic AI use cases.
* Support data modelling, mapping, and documentation for integration workflows.
* Troubleshoot pipeline issues, improve performance, and optimise processes.
* Work with APIs, streaming data platforms, and batch workflows as required by the project.
* Implement data governance practices, including metadata, lineage, and quality checks.
* Support cloud‑based data integration using tools such as Azure Data Factory, AWS Glue, Google Dataflow, IBM watsonx.data integration, or similar platforms.
Required Education
* Bachelor’s Degree (2:1 or equivalent).
Preferred Education
* Master’s Degree.
Required Technical Skills
* Experience with agentic data engineering patterns and principles.
* Significant experience in prompt engineering and responsible AI & agentic tools.
* Proficiency in at least one programming/scripting language (Python, SQL, or Scala).
* Understanding of ETL/ELT concepts, data warehousing, and integration patterns.
* Exposure to cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud).
* Familiarity with data modelling, database structures, and APIs.
* Problem‑solving skills in debugging data quality, transformation, and pipeline issues.
* Knowledge of tools such as DataStage, Informatica, Talend, dbt, Airflow, or similar.
* Understanding of batch vs. real‑time data processing.
* Capability to author data assets that are both human and machine readable with appropriate documentation and metadata tagging.

* Strong analytical approach to problem solving.
* Excellent communication skills – able to explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
* Ability to manage an agentic data engineering organisational hierarchy.
* Capability to construct complex prompts to instruct and guide an agent’s behaviour.
* Intellectual curiosity and adaptability to new technologies, practices, and frameworks.
* Strong communication skills with comfort explaining technical concepts clearly.
* Ability to prioritise tasks and work in fast‑moving environments.
* Growth mindset and willingness to learn quickly.
Eligibility
* Must hold British Nationality, UK work permit, or indefinite leave to remain – no visa sponsorship.
* Minimum of 5 years UK continuous residency.
* Subject to pre‑employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS).
