Key Purpose of Job
The Optical Team seeks a Cleanroom Laboratory Manager to ensure the efficient running of SSTL’s Optical Cleanroom Facility to aid in the development and delivery of the next generation of Optical Payloads for SSTL’s spacecraft. This will involve being responsible for the cleanroom and associated equipment.
Key Tasks
1. Ensure the operational running of an Optical Cleanroom Facility, including setting up and operating equipment & hand tools, and maintaining stock of consumables and garments.
2. Troubleshoot and coordinate with manufacturers and service centers to minimize downtime, including repairs.
3. Track calibration items and dispatch for servicing as needed.
4. Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards, including risk assessments and COSHH documentation.
5. Provide induction and training for facility users, monitor practices, and enforce cleanliness and safety standards.
6. Assist the Optical AIV Manager with process development and maintenance.
7. Coordinate with facilities team for maintenance, IT, and cleaning services.
8. Manage project use of equipment, resolving conflicts where possible.
9. Participate in optical payload delivery, including cleaning, inspection, supporting build activities, and operating equipment like TVAC, CMM, ultrasonic cleaners, and optical measurement devices.
10. Organize external testing facilities and support internal handling and transportation of flight items.
Previous Experience
* Experience in a cleanroom environment.
* Experience with sensitive hardware, preferably optics or spaceflight hardware.
* Familiarity with test and measurement equipment.
* Experience maintaining risk assessments and working with safety regulations.
* Experience coordinating with external suppliers and maintaining lab equipment.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills
* Degree in engineering or science preferred; relevant experience considered.
* Training in handling equipment like cranes, forklifts, etc.
* Practical skills with hand tools and measurement devices.
* Attention to detail, self-motivation, and creativity.
* Knowledge of Quality Management systems.
* Strong planning, organization, and communication skills.
* Ability to operate a Thermal Vacuum Chamber is a plus, willingness to learn required.
* Willingness to undergo SC clearance (NSV).
Location
Based at SSTL Head Office in Guildford. SSTL offers flexible working arrangements.
