The Power & Civils Business within VolkerRail Specialist Businesses offers comprehensive electrical design and installation within all railway environments, overhead line installation, ancillary civils construction, and piling services. We provide a turnkey, multi-discipline service that includes survey, ground investigation, design and engineering, construction, testing, and commissioning for all railway power elements.
Our services encompass the design, construction, and modification of both High Voltage and Low Voltage power distribution systems for the UK operational railway, including essential supplies for signalling power and train control. We also work on railway facilities such as depots and stations, installing lighting, small power, and depot protection systems.
For overhead line electrification equipment, we support projects from early design to full installation, testing, and commissioning. We also perform various lineside civils work, including under track crossings and concrete base and formation works.
Our services range from small projects to large multi-million-pound turnkey packages, covering early project development to final commissioning and handover, either as the principal contractor or as Tier 2 and 3 suppliers.
We are currently working on a number of contracts some examples of which include TransPennine Route upgrade (TRue), Radlett Depot, North Western Electrification Programme, West Coast Signalling Power Supply Upgrade, Edgeley Feeder Station. VolkerRail have also been appointed on CP7 Framework in Southern Region and in Scotland.
VolkerRail are seeking hard working and enthusiastic people to join our Power business. Based at our Doncaster office, you will be required to support projects across the UK, so a willingness to travel, lodge away from home and work weekends (if necessary) is essential.
A proven track record of successfully working on large-scale Rail-based construction projects, have experience in the management of E&P railway infrastructure projects and an electrical engineering or construction background are essential for the role.
Reporting to the E&P Head of Operations, you will be responsible for the line management of the E&P delivery team (Electrical Supervision, Electricians and agency staff) and the Power & Civils Resourcing team. The key objective of this role is to provide guidance and support to the frontline rostered team in collaboration with the Senior E&P Project Engineering team and Construction Management.
About you
Duties of the role will include but not be limited to:
* Strategic E&P Resource planning and recruitment.
* Management of the Power & Civils Resource Coordination team.
* Engagement with agency suppliers and specialist subcontractors to meet project requirements.
* Management of the Power & Civils white vehicle fleet including vehicle inspections, SAMSARA (telematics) reviews, monthly reporting and associated interventions for poor driving events.
* The management of Rostered staff timesheets and expenses.
* The management of Holidays, sickness, absence and disciplinary matters.
* The Promotion of Business improvements and HSQE initiatives through regular meetings and site engagement with frontline staff.
* Site Audits and inspections to support delivery assurance.
* Management of Test Instruments, small plant, tools and equipment including PUWER compliance, calibration, distribution, traceability and recall.
* Training, competency and development of all frontline E&P staff including quarterly PDR’s (Personal Development Reviews).
* Production of E&P Training Budgets and associated cost control.
* Recruitment and management of Apprentices in collaboration with the Senior E&P Engineers
* Guidance and support to frontline E&P staff through line management.
* Attend monthly meetings with the Senior Management Team as required including the production and delivery of reports and presentations.
Key Interfaces
Regular engagement and collaboration with the Power and Civils Senior Management team, Senior E&P Project Engineers, Construction Managers and the HSQE team.
The successful candidate will be organised and with experience in the management of a medium sized team. They will be computer literate, have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate at all levels face to face, and through all modern means available. They will hold formal qualifications in Electrical Engineering including IET 18 th Edition Regs with demonstrable experience in E&P Project Management and delivery in an operational railway environment. Formal training through the Institute of Leadership and Management ILM4 / 5 or similar would be advantageous. Experience with Responsible Manager duties, COSS and Ontrack Plant Management would also be advantageous. A full driving licence is an essential requirement for the role.
