My client is building an AI material scientist that goes end-to-end from hypothesis generation to testing in their own high-throughput lab. They're targeting thermoelectrics, high entropy alloys, and magnets to fundamentally change the physical world.
You'll join a 6-person team with folks from Isomorphic Labs, Microsoft Research, Cambridge, and Oxford. They raised >$4M pre-seed from Khosla Ventures and are preparing for a seed round in January with incredibly generous equity.
We are looking for a Founding Research Engineer with 2+ years of experience to help build the infrastructure, tools, and prototypes that power the AI Material Scientist. This person will work across research and engineering, turning new ideas in modeling, reasoning, and experiment automation into robust and scalable systems. This is a hands-on role in a deeply technical and exploratory environment, with a split of approximately 30% research and 70% engineering.

* 2+ years of experience in research engineering, with a focus on ML infrastructure/training and Python
* Experience in modern ML development (training, evaluation, inference, distributed systems).
* Experience at companies like DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs, Meta, Microsoft Research, Google, Chai, Cognition, Palantir, Evolutoiinar, Scale, Allen Institute for AI.
* Experience in a startup environment or with founder mentality.
* Bachelor's, Master's, or equivalent in CS, Engineering, Applied Math.
* Solid understanding of data engineering and software design.
* Strong programming skills in Python and PyTorch.
* Comfortable with Linux, Git, HPC, or cloud platforms.
* Willing to work in- office 3+ days/week (SF or London).
* What will you be doing?
* Build and maintain ML training and inference pipelines, including distributed training, data preprocessing, and model deployment workflows.
* Develop research tooling and infrastructure that accelerates iteration across simulation, experiment, and AI-driven reasoning.
* Implement and evaluate new ML algorithms while working closely with scientists and research teams to prototype and test ideas.
* Optimize performance, reliability, and reproducibility across HPC clusters, cloud systems, and experiment interfaces.
* Contribute to data management, curation, and evaluation frameworks for structured and unstructured scientific data.
