Senior Planning Officer
Location: RochfordSalary: Flexible, dependent on experienceContract Type: 6-Month Fixed Term (with potential for extension)Hours: 37 hours per week
We are recruiting on behalf of our client, a local authority in Rochford, for an experienced and motivated Senior Planning Officer to join their Strategic Planning Team. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the development of key planning policies and lead on high-profile projects that will shape the future of the district.
The Role
The successful candidate will report to the Corporate Manager and play a central role in delivering the Council’s Local Plan and other planning policy documents. You will lead on specific projects, mentor junior staff, and deputise for the Corporate Manager when required. This role involves working with a wide range of stakeholders and representing the Council in cross-boundary and partnership planning work.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and contribute to the preparation of the Local Plan and other planning policy documents.
* Mentor and support junior planners, fostering a collaborative team environment.
* Represent the Council in sub-regional and joint plan-making initiatives.
* Organise and lead public consultations and stakeholder engagement activities.
* Prepare and present evidence at committee meetings, public examinations, and inquiries.
* Liaise with developers, infrastructure providers, and consultants to support strategic development.
* Manage consultant commissions and ensure delivery of high-quality outputs.
* Provide specialist planning advice and deliver training to Members and stakeholders.
* Support statutory responsibilities including the brownfield and self/custom build registers.
Candidate Profile
* Degree in Town Planning or a related discipline, with eligibility for RTPI membership.
* Proven experience in planning policy preparation and project management.
* Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a proactive and flexible approach.
* Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with planning legislation and best practice.
