Job Description: Electrical Design Engineer
Position: Electrical Design Engineer
Location: Birmingham
Contract: Permanent, Full‑time
Role & Purpose
As an Electrical Design Engineer, you’ll be part of a multi‑disciplinary building services team, contributing to technically complex and sustainable engineering projects. You will design electrical systems (power, lighting, communications, small power, etc.) for a variety of buildings including residential, healthcare, commercial, and regeneration schemes. You’ll work collaboratively with structural, mechanical, and sustainability engineers to deliver creative, efficient, and future‑proof engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop detailed electrical system designs (schematics, layouts, circuiting, load calculations) for new build and refurbishment projects.
* Prepare specification documentation, technical reports, and design deliverables for client and regulatory review.
* Perform lighting design (both daylighting and artificial), power distribution, earthing, and small power design.
* Coordinate with other disciplines (mechanical, structural, civil, energy) to ensure integrated and optimised building services solutions.
* Carry out electrical system modelling, load assessments, voltage drop, short‑circuit calculations, and harmonics analysis.
* Assess compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and codes (e.g., BS, CIBSE, IET, building regulations).
* Support sustainability initiatives — propose low‑carbon electrical solutions in line with carbon reduction goals.
* Engage in early‑stage design discussions (feasibility, concept), offering technical insight and value engineering.
* Provide support during construction (site visits, commissioning, testing, snagging).
* Liaise with clients, contractors, and suppliers to deliver projects on time and within budget.
* Contribute to continuous improvement: share technical best practice, mentor junior engineers, and support innovation.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
* Degree (BEng/MEng or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Experience (2–7 years) in electrical design within a consultancy or engineering firm.
* Strong knowledge of building services engineering: power distribution, lighting, earthing, small power, etc.
* Proficiency in design software and analysis tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Dialux, or similar).
* Sound understanding of UK electrical regulations and standards (e.g. IET wiring regulations, Building Regulations).
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written — able to collaborate across disciplines.
* Strong problem‑solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative but pragmatic engineering solutions.
* Demonstrable commitment to sustainability and low‑carbon design.
Desirable:
* Experience with BIM workflows (Revit or other BIM tools).
* Familiarity with energy/sustainability assessments (e.g. embodied carbon, low‑carbon systems).
* Experience in healthcare, residential or regeneration projects.
* Knowledge of project delivery frameworks (e.g., RIBA, design‑build).
* Professional membership or working toward registration (e.g., CIBSE, IET, or ICE).
Personal Attributes
* Collaborative and team‑oriented, but capable of working independently.
* Proactive and self‑motivated, with a commitment to professional development.
* Detail‑focused with strong organisational and time management skills.
* Adaptable; comfortable working on multiple projects at different stages.
* Passionate about sustainable design and engineering excellence.
What’s in It for You
* Opportunity to work on high‑profile, technically challenging, and sustainable engineering projects.
* A supportive company culture with mentorship, development, and learning at its core.
* Structured career development: support for professional qualification and IPD.
* Hybrid working potential (depending on role requirements) and flexible working arrangements.
* Competitive salary and benefits package.
* Contribute to a consultancy that aims to be carbon neutral by 2030.
