Working as a Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO) in Prisoner Escort Custody Services (PECS) is more than just a role—it's an opportunity to be part of a professional team that plays a vital role in the justice system, ensuring safety and security every day.
We are operational 24/6, covering various early and late shifts, 35 hours per week. Flexibility is key due to the nature of the role, with different working arrangements and additional hours. The rota (provided 12 weeks in advance) allows flexibility for time off to enjoy personal activities.
About the Role:
As a PCO at our court, you'll work as part of a team to provide safe and secure escorting and custody services to detainees, focusing on their physical and mental wellbeing. During court proceedings, you'll manage detainees until they return to custody or are released. Key duties include:
1. Escorting defendants within the court, including to the toilet, potentially being handcuffed to detainees.
2. Monitoring detainees in the docks during court sessions to ensure security.
3. Maintaining confidentiality of sensitive court information.
4. Supporting detainees emotionally while managing distressing testimonies.
5. Providing access to food and drinks, catering to dietary needs.
6. Monitoring health and reporting concerns.
7. Ensuring court security, including searches and incident response.
8. Completing paperwork accurately, logging movements and incidents.
9. Collaborating with court staff, law enforcement, and legal professionals.
Candidate Requirements:
We welcome diverse backgrounds; prior experience isn't necessary. Commitment to making a difference is essential. Training is provided. A valid driver's license, good communication skills, and physical fitness are desirable. The role requires responsibility, vigilance, and professionalism, especially when handling challenging situations. Interest in criminology or psychology is a plus.

Additional Information:
All roles require enhanced DBS checks and references. The role isn't eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. Candidates must have at least two years remaining on their current visa and have lived in the UK for at least one year.
