A young lady living in Peebles with her parents is seeking reliable and committed Personal Assistants to join her experienced small team. The young lady has 2:1 support at all times. She has disabilities related to cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
This rewarding role involves providing support with daily living, intimate personal care and social activities at home, within the local community and beyond. The successful candidate will promote choice, wellbeing and enjoyment, whilst also providing occasional respite for the family.
The role focuses on her health and wellbeing and enjoying life to the full.
She enjoys activities including boccia, bowling, Interest Link Groups, hydrotherapy, crafting, music, cinema, concerts, beach wheelchairs and shopping.
A full driving licence is essential as she has her own mobility vehicle to access activities and attend appointments.
Full training and shadowing will be provided including PEG training (carried out by Nutrica Nurse), Peristeen, and epilepsy rescue medication.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities
* To ensure medication is administered through PEG in a safe and timely manner.
* Personal care including intimate bowel management is carried out always respecting the persons privacy and dignity.
* Following a consistent morning routine to ensure her health and wellbeing are maintained.
* Support with feeding following SALT guidelines.
* Support with communication and facilitating choices.
* Carrying out safe moving and handling tasks using equipment provided.
* Support to appointments, social groups and other social activities.
* Liaise with team members, family and professionals to ensure consistent, high-quality care.
* Respect the person’s choices, values, privacy and dignity at all times.
* Advocate for person where appropriate and deal with situations calmly and professionally.
Person Specification
* Patient, caring and sensitive in understand her needs.
* Get to know her (a care background is not essential) so you know what she is saying without words.
* Honest, reliable and respectful of confidentiality.
* Positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills.
* Able to work effectively as part of a small team.
* Be able to notice person’s cues – e.g. mannerisms that indicate she is about to have a seizure or being able to see that she looks physically uncomfortable.
* Be calm and patient – it’s not nice to see her sore because she’s in some discomfort – we sing a lot!
* Hold a full and current drivers licence as the role requires the use of a vehicle.
* Be comfortable supporting the person in all aspects of her life and daily routine.
* Believe in her and always assume ability rather than disability – despite her lack of spoken language, she fully comprehends what she hears.
Skills and Experience
Experience supporting individuals with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning disability is desirable but not essential as training will be provided.
Hours of work
Wednesday: 8.00am -12.00pm
Friday: 8:00am – 6.00pm
Saturday & Sunday 10.00am – 8.00pm every other weekend
Hourly rates
Pay Rate: £14.05 per hour weekdays.
£15.00 per hour weekends.
