Clerk of Works – NHS (Band 8a)

Contract: Initially 2 months
Rate: £280 per day (Inside IR35)

An NHS organisation in London is seeking an experienced M&E Clerk of Works to support its Capital, Estates & Facilities function. This is a key role ensuring that engineering projects are delivered safely, to specification, and to the highest quality standards.
The Role
You will act as the organisation’s “eyes and ears” on site across multiple major and minor works schemes. The role focuses on quality assurance, compliance and technical oversight, ensuring all works meet required NHS standards, relevant legislation, and project specifications.
You will carry out regular site inspections, produce clear technical reports, highlight risks, and ensure that all contractors are working safely and delivering work that aligns with agreed designs, drawings and performance criteria.
Key Responsibilities
* Undertake regular inspections of building, mechanical and electrical works across clinical and non-clinical environments.
* Verify quality, workmanship, materials and compliance with contract documents, specifications, HTMs, HBNs and Building Regulations.
* Prepare detailed site reports, including progress updates, photographic evidence, snagging lists and defect schedules.
* Witness testing, commissioning and validation of new installations.
* Ensure accurate record keeping, including daily logs, project documentation and asset information updates.
* Liaise closely with project managers, design teams, Estates, clinical teams and external consultants.
* Identify non-compliant works and support the organisation in taking corrective action.
* Promote a strong culture of quality, safety, value for money and continuous improvement across all projects.
Essential Experience & Skills
* Significant experience as a Clerk of Works or site quality inspector—ideally within healthcare or similarly complex, safety-critical environments.
* Strong understanding of construction, building services, technical standards, HTM/HBN guidance and British Standards.
* Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and contracts.
* Confident assessing and challenging site health & safety practices.
* Methodical, detail-driven and able to work independently across multiple projects.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to influence contractors and stakeholders.
