Role: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Chorley
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 depending on experience + Benefits
The Role
Reporting to the Engineering manager, the Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the design & development of new and/or existing products utilising the clients technical capabilities. This includes pressure vessels, pressure control systems and other equipment/systems that complement the products in line with client/industry requirements.
Responsibilities:
Design, development and specification of new and existing pressure related products where typical design requirements include: -
Pressure bearing components (≤60,000 psi)
Load bearing components
High pressure seal arrangements
Integration with proprietary components
Hydraulic & Pneumatic actuation
Lifting & Handling points
Fabrications
Tooling & Fixtures
Ensure designs conform to industry, customer and company standards
Select suitable materials, surface finishes, coatings and treatments for the products intended use
Carry out regular design reviews with the team and/or customer
Analyse designs using suitable tools and liaise with third party design verification company
Carry out value added value engineering (VAVE) to engineer cost out of the products
Output accurate models, drawings, BOM’s and other technical documents to customers, both internal and external
Check & sign off drawings in line with relevant drawing standards
Carry out engineering changes using revision control procedures
Carry out administration of document management system
Manage design based non-conformances
You Will Have:
Experience using 2D & 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
In-depth knowledge of relevant industry standards: - PED, PD5500, ASME VIII, EN13445
FE Analysis of Pressure Vessels (Ansys preferred)
Ability to carry out hand calculations (force, torque, bending moments, hoop stress, shear stress, weld strength etc.)
Risk Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) & Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
Administration & usage of Document Management Systems (EPDM)
Knowledge of high spec. materials, coatings and finishes including stainless and carbon steels, structural steels, elastomers and performance plastics
Project Management
Strong IT skills

Experience & Qualifications:
BEng or BSc (Hons) in mechanical engineering or equivalent (2.1 minimum)
Industry experience; ideally in high pressure systems, hydraulics, pressure vessels or associated supply.
