Job summary We are excited to advertise this new psychology post, funded as a component of a successful bid for a high-risk Tier 3 pilot for people living with obesity and significant metabolic complications, who require urgent weight management to access life-prolonging treatments. Obesity is a lifelong condition which has a debilitating effect on patients mental and physical wellbeing, and patients frequently fail to lose a significant amount of weight without medical and psychological input. The pilot will support up to 150 people with severe obesity and significant related health conditions to achieve the weight loss that will allow access to life-sustaining treatment, such as organ transplants, treatment for pre-cancerous or cancerous conditions and cardiac procedures. Patients will receive multi-disciplinary input, including specialist medical input, dietetics, exercise advice, psychology as needed and when appropriate pharmacotherapy (semaglutide). This pilot is the first stage of several initiatives which will improve the capacity of, and access to weight management services, in a collaboration between Barts Health, the Northeast London (NEL). The hope is that this proof-of-concept pilot will lead to permanent funding for psychological support within NEL obesity services. Main duties of the job To provide specialist psychological assessment & treatment on an individual basis as appropriate, for individuals with obesity receiving multidisciplinary weight management interventions, including treatment with the weight-loss medication Semaglutide (Wegowy). To contribute to MDT meetings and offer specialist psychological advice and consultation on managing weight loss to non-psychologist colleagues To contribute to the collection and analysis of outcome data required by the pilot commissioners and to utilise research skills for audit and research purposes as required. The successful candidate will be able to work on a Wednesday morning, which is when the obesity service multidisciplinary clinic and MDT meeting takes place. If you would like to be an integral part of supporting improvements in health equality amongst people living with obesity, by providing improved access to required treatment, and are interested in applying for this post, then you are encouraged to make contact for an informal discussion.
