St Lawrence College is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and outstanding candidate as Head of Hockey and Elite Performance. The successful candidate will work both at a strategic and tactical level, playing a vital role in the delivery of short-, medium- and longer-term objectives at one of the leading co-educational hockey schools in the country. Their primary role will be to lead our Hockey program and also to direct our Elite Performance program.
Hockey has a rich history at St Lawrence College, with both the boys' and girls' program going from strength to strength. Our most recent accolades have been the U16 Boys Tier 2 National Plate Champions 2025, U15 Boys ISHC National Runners Up 2024, U16 Girls Tier 2 National Cup Runners Up 2024
Since 2016, no fewer than nine teams have represented the College in indoor and outdoor National Finals. Out of these we have secured the U13 boys (2017), U18 Boys indoor (2018), U16 Boys indoor and U18 Girls National titles. It is an incredibly exciting time to join, with four national titles already secured we are continually looking to push our games forwards and continue this upward trend.
Hockey is the main sport for girls in the First Term and for boys during the Second Term. The Director of Hockey and Elite Performance will be required to plan and coach at all ability levels during the timetabled games sessions for each year group; however, their prime focus will be on our performance squads. Indoor practices take place after school and there is a comprehensive outdoor fixture list at weekends as well as a number of midweek games. The successful candidate will also deliver high level small group or one to one session with our extensive list of NAGS and Talent Academy players.
The successful candidate will have a proven coaching record, and it is highly desirable that the post holder will have played or coached to a very high standard. The successful candidate will be expected to motivate their students and staff alike and work closely with the Director of Sport to deliver high quality coaching. It is expected that all applicants will be passionate and self-motivated yet will have the ability to work as part of a team – within the PE & Games department and the wider College community where all sports co-exist.
Alongside these responsibilities the Head of Hockey and Elite Performance should also aim to strengthen our hockey link with our Junior School. We pride ourselves on bringing young talent through our school and the Junior School plays a significant role as part of our talent pathway. This would involve coaching sessions to our Junior School pupils and developing the coaching skills of the staff in the Junior School. The final link that we are extremely keen to maintain is with Canterbury Hockey Club. We strongly encourage our pupils to play senior hockey, and we will always look to facilitate our hockey players so that they can play at the highest level. The Head of Hockey will be involved in the progression of players not just through the school but also through Canterbury HC.
The role of Head of Hockey and Elite Performance is an important element of our elite sporting provision. The successful candidate will coordinate and lead our Sports Excellence Program, ensuring that our higher-level performers are not only gaining the skills necessary for their chosen sport, but also gaining an understanding of the other elements of elite performance (mental toughness, nutrition, strength & conditioning, recovery etc).
All colleagues are expected to act as a pastoral tutor, attached to a day or boarding house, and should be willing to be involved with the wider life of a busy boarding and day school.
