For over 30 years, the Angelou Centre has stood with Black and racialised women and children. We are a Black-led organisation based in Newcastle, specialising in support for those at risk of or affected by domestic abuse and other forms of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG).
We provide trauma-informed, culturally responsive services that help women, children and young people recover from violence, abuse and discrimination - rebuilding safety, confidence and independence.
We listen. We understand. We never judge.
About the Role
The Move-On support worker plays a crucial new role in bridging the gap between crisis refuge accommodation and fully independent living. Once women have stabilised, resolved immigration barriers, and are ready to move beyond crisis support, they transition into our Move-On accommodation. Here, the support needs shift: women require practical skills, confidence-building, navigation support and structured guidance to begin rebuilding their lives independently.
The Move-On Advocate focuses on these areas: supporting women with housing applications, employment and volunteering pathways, school applications, budgeting, community integration, and managing a home confidently. This role will also design and deliver a practical “Independent Living Curriculum” to ensure every woman leaves the Angelou Centre equipped with the skills, knowledge and confidence to thrive.
This is a hands-on, empowering, and deeply rewarding role, ideal for someone passionate about helping survivors transition into independence and long-term stability.
