Team Manager (Analytical Chemistry) - Food and Consumer Goods
Overview
The Team Manager leads chemical testing studies and project-specific method development and validation within the Office of The Government Chemist (OGC). The role supports the Head of the OGC to maintain high-quality standards, develops and implements methods in support of statutory and advisory functions, participates in proficiency testing schemes, drives continuous improvement, and ensures understanding of customer requirements. It is a combined management and delivery role overseeing a small team of scientists responsible for delivering a statutory function, government-funded projects and customer-driven analysis.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage laboratory operations: planning, resource utilisation, and delivery to stated quality, time and budget targets in compliance with internal and external performance standards.
* Manage commercial customer relationships: reporting progress, updating clients, developing future work, and providing technical advice to deliver value.
* Develop new business in appropriate areas and disseminate scientific developments internally and externally.
* Ensure accurate record keeping and report writing; critically appraise scientific data from a variety of sources.
* Act as a reference for technical guidance to other team members; mentor and develop scientists with clear goals and performance measures aligned to LGC values.
* Manage, develop and motivate scientists to ensure engagement and alignment with LGC values; maintain a safe and productive working environment.
* Ensure regulatory and legal compliance and contribute to a quality management system aligned to business needs; lead laboratory health and safety responsibilities including risk assessments and safety protocols.
* Create a proactive approach to continuous improvement, including recommendations for investment in equipment and methodology to deliver efficiency and productivity improvements for stakeholders and customers.
* Collaborate with the Team Manager for Referee Analysis and Special Projects as required.
* Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role.
Qualifications
Essential:
* A sound background in Chemistry, educated to at least degree level or equivalent, with significant practical experience in analytical chemistry.
* Working knowledge of major instrumental analytical techniques (ICP, AA, GC, GC-MS, LC and LC-MS) with in-depth knowledge of at least one.
* Practical experience in ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories; familiarity with quality management systems and requirements (including auditing) and their implementation and maintenance to meet external customer needs and expectations.
* Experience of directly managing customer requirements, including understanding initial needs, realistic deadlines and communicating outcomes of contracted work.
* Experience of critically reviewing data and recommending appropriate actions where results do not meet specifications (including quality control).
* Experience of managing and developing scientific staff, and handling complex people-related issues to achieve positive outcomes.
* Ability to understand key goals/milestones and deliver quality solutions efficiently and within budget.
* Clear and honest communication, with the ability to convey complex scientific concepts to both expert and lay audiences.
Desirable:
* Familiarisation with other quality systems (e.g., ISO 9001) and audit requirements.
* Basic financial numeracy and management.
