The role
As a Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. You will play a pivotal role in delivering submarine maintenance programmes that are critical to the United Kingdom’s defence capability. Acting as a subject matter expert, you will provide technical leadership, assurance, and guidance across complex mechanical commissioning activities, ensuring work is delivered safely, compliantly, and to the highest professional engineering standards.
Day-to-day, you’ll be required to:
1. Lead and coordinate mechanical commissioning activities across submarine maintenance periods
2. Provide technical assurance through inspections, testing, and commissioning against design intent and specifications
3. Engage with stakeholders, representing Babcock at meetings with the Ministry of Defence and relevant authorities
4. Manage commissioning risk, contributing to risk registers and mitigation planning
5. Ensure compliance with professional engineering standards, quality requirements, and nuclear and submarine safety constraints.
This is a full‑time role, working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, based in Plymouth, Devon. Hybrid working patterns are available under local agreement.
Essential experience of the Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer:
6. Extensive commissioning experience across submarine or complex marine maintenance programmes
7. Strong background in submarine or ship operations or refit environments
8. Proven ability to work confidently across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups
9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
10. Ability to adapt, prioritise, and lead effectively in dynamic, operational environments
Qualifications for the Senior Mechanical Commissioning Engineer:
11. HNC in a mechanical engineering discipline or equivalent relevant experience
12. Additional engineering or professional qualifications are advantageous.

The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and Security Check (SC) and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
