The Role
As a GIS Consultant, you will be a key member of our spatial-analysis team, bringing your expertise in geographic information systems to support environmental projects across sectors (e.g., infrastructure, property & regeneration, minerals & waste, renewable energy). You will work closely with ecologists, hydrologists, engineers and planning professionals to deliver high quality spatial data products, visualisations and analysis that inform project decisions.
Key responsibilities include:
* Develop, maintain and manage GIS datasets (desktop & cloud-based) to support environmental assessments, surveys, monitoring and reporting.
* Produce spatial outputs (maps, figures, infographics) for planning applications, EIA chapters, ecological/hydrological reports, client presentations.
* Perform spatial analyses (e.g., habitat mapping, buffer/zone modelling, land-use change, connectivity, suitability modelling) using ArcGIS / QGIS / other relevant tools.
* Work with non-GIS colleagues to interpret mapping requirements, translate technical requests into spatial deliverables, and present findings clearly.
* Ensure data quality, metadata standards, version control and compliance with relevant legislation, codes of practice and company procedures.
* Assist with fieldwork or data-collection planning (e.g., survey extents, GPS setup, drone/UAV operations) as required.
* Stay abreast of emerging GIS technologies, workflows (e.g., Python/R scripting, automation, GIS in cloud) and integrate best practices into our workflows.
* Support business development: prepare sample maps and spatial visuals, contribute to marketing/technical proposals and help raise the profile of our GIS capability.
Person Specification
Essential:
* 2-3 years’ GIS experience in an environmental consultancy or similar interdisciplinary consultancy environment.
* Demonstrable experience with desktop GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, QGIS); comfortable producing high-quality maps and spatial outputs.
* Strong spatial analysis skills and ability to interpret mapping/data requirements from technical colleagues.
* Good knowledge of coordinate systems, metadata, spatial data structures, data validation and version control.
* Strong communication skills – able to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders, present spatial outputs in an understandable way.
* Self-motivated, organised, with attention to detail and able to manage multiple tasks/priorities.
* Collaborative mindset – comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team and liaising externally with clients/partners.
Desirable:
* Experience with scripting/automation tools (Python, R, ModelBuilder) in a GIS environment.
* Experience with drone/UAV derived datasets, LiDAR, 3D spatial modelling or BIM integration.
* Experience working on planning applications, EIA chapters or environmental surveys.
* Knowledge of environmental/gis legislation, planning policy, habitat mapping conventions, BNG (Biodiversity Net Gain) spatial requirements.
* Interest in business development, marketing of GIS services and growing GIS capability.
